On August 3rd 2015, I left Elizabeth NJ to pick up my next load in western Ohio. Marylou came with me in the truck many times, and it went without saying that neither of us like New Jersey. I did not expect a visit from her just then, but I was missing her bad that day, and I played her favorite music, Alabama on the stereo. Quite to my surprise, I could feel her presence in the truck, right there on the New Jersey Turnpike, our least-favorite place.
I just kept the hammer-down and Alabama on the stereo, and I could feel her like she was there for-real...well, she was there for real...I was learning to feel her Spirit. The first thing you have to do, is allow yourself to believe. And the next thing you have to do, is never let anyone talk you out of believing.
It was 9-1/2 hours, including a stop for chow, from NJ to the small town of Upper Sandusky, Ohio. I was within 10 miles of where I had to load next day, and maybe 10-hours ahead of it, so I pulled the truck into a rest area to get some shut-eye; I parked on the back row facing a small cornfield with a treeline behind. It was just getting dusk with a beautiful multi-colored sunset in the clear sky beyond the treeline...and with Alabama playing on the stereo, I could still feel Marylou very much with me.
As the darkness began to envelope the treeline, the fireflies came alive...the darker it got, the heavier the fireflies got...by the time it got full-dark, the fireflies looked like a display of fireworks, just for the two of us...and with the soft love songs of Alabama playing in the background, that show of fireworks became a memory for the two of us.
People can say it's just an invention of my grief if they want. But you don't get that profound joy that you feel in the bottom of your soul from inventions-of-the-mind. Her Spirit was with me. Still is.
