I've always enjoyed/been concerned reading this woman's blog from Cuba. It's one of the "true" accounts you'll get of what life is actually like there:

Havana, Cuba (CNN) -- A Cuban woman known for writing critical blogs about life in the communist nation said she was briefly detained by government agents Friday in the capital.

Yoani Sanchez said agents pulled her hair and beat her when she refused to get into their car, according to Roots of Hope, a nonprofit that works with Cuban youth. She said she was on her way to an anti-violence march when she was detained.

Sanchez gained international attention for her blog "Generation Y," which gets about 1 million hits a month.

Before agents released Sanchez, they warned her that her writings had gone too far, the nonprofit said. Freedom of speech is limited in the island nation, where media are controlled by the government.

There was no immediate comment from the Cuban government on Sanchez's claims, which CNN could not independently verify.

Earlier this year, the blogger was named one of the world's 100 most influential people by Time magazine. The government barred her from traveling to New York in October to receive a journalism award.

" All governments act to protect themselves and the laws they believe in and expect citizens to live by. The US treats people they feel will do this government harm, and do not concern themselves with what the rest of the world thinks or laws of other countries. I would say that this is the same type of thing. "

" Yes, but if you write about how bad the US is will someone show up at your house and beat the crap out of you? Probably not. This post was more or less directed to (former) posters who had visions of how well communism etc was working in Cuba (which is, well, "not well at all")...so anyone reading this who's got their Che posters tacked up or on their t-shirts, don't buy the romantic/heroic stories of the Revolution...Fidel pissed it all away by becoming a brutal dictator. "

" I think that it might happen that some people will say that someone infiltrated and did this and it is connected to the United States and that it was done to make a point for the people who suggest that Obama is a communist. I think that it will be used to say like is this what you want? But then the others will argue that this is just how far people will go to get Obama and that the United States is already like that if you don't agree. And then people will say that it was like that after Bush put in the Patriot Act. And then others will say it should be like that if people are talking bad it might mean that they are suggesting violence. And then people will say that it is all about seeing the truth and that is a huge problem of perception. "

" Why is she still blogging after having this happen and knowing the rules and laws and punishment that country has?

I agree she should be able to, I agree the police and Government are wrong, but why subject yourself to punishment and possible jail time breaking the laws of the country you live in, and doing it openly in defiance towards the Government. "

" Poor thing, did she not earn enough government credits to eat this week? Friggen Marxists. I wish Sean Penn would just emigrate already, and take Pelosi's dumbass, Obama, and Reid with ker. Not to mention, Garafalo, and every other imbecile who has visited the Castro brothers in the last few years. God I'd love to see them under the credits and vouchers system with rationed food and medicines. I know some Cuban Americans, whose parents used to spit on the ground, and wish death on Castro every time they heard his name. That is some serious hate. Soon, as with Venezuela, the internet will be rationed, shut down, or KGB'd. Soon beatings won't suffice. Marxism is NOT the way. Big government, and centralized anything is death to liberty, but we just keep giving our lives and liberty away. Shame on us. "

" Talk to your doctor about those voices in your head, Diane. Get mental help before mental health is rationed even further. I insist since I'm paying. "

Who are you aiming this at Sk8? The blogger in question is not Marxist etc...she's fighting against the Cuban government, hence the beatings/travel restrictions etc... "
