Patriotism is a devotion to a certain place or people,
contrary to nationalism which is inseparable from lust for power"

" as you can see, orwell makes two statements in his quote. the first is a fact. the second is an opinion. "

" yes, and you can see how he came to that opinion
when you live in a country that wars with other nations
for reasons that have very little to do with the good of the American people
and very much to do with lust for power/control, no?

but the propaganda machine convinces the populace that invading, occupying and killing almost a million people in another nation, is good for the US, when really, its been good for the military industrial complex, and oil companies "

" yes, it really is about american jobs in the defense industry because the us does not get very much oil from the middle east.

the us could safely cut 50% from its defense budget if it wanted to and that would make other countries pick up more of the slack in the policeman area. "

" I would replace the word "jobs" with contracts
I dont think defense lobbyists really are motivated by how many jobs they can create for Americans, although I am certain they put that spin on it
I think whats more true is that theyre motivated by power...and profit

so we're back to Orwell "

" I didnt read 1984 until my first year university. I was so gripped I read it in one sitting. I finished it late at night, and couldnt sleep the entire night because it rang so true and so concerning. Its become more and more true as time fas passed since then. "

" doomsday?

I dont consider it doomsday stuff, no

but he was one of a number of people who saw what was happening and understood where things were going

which is why it was so chilling to read, because so much of it had become reality "
