My 15 year old son has vitiligo....He's a medium toned caucasion boy...They 'spots' really popped this summer....his armpits are so bad now that the hair is white....he's always had 2 little 'gray' spots' in his hair...that's it until this summer. My Dad and his sister has it...my Dad's hands only as far as I know, but his sister had it all over on her face in her teens and it went away....I know there are lot's of various reasons and it's hard to pin...the Doctor (pediatrician) things that since his armpit and groin hairs are white, it may not go away....sigh....we're gonna try a dermatologist...the doc thinks a topical steroid may work in some areas......I've Googled and read a lot....it's just so complicated because there are so many causes....If you have any imput I'd so appreciate it! Thanks!

" I think the best know factor about vitiligo causes is autoimmunity. and as described by http://www.antivitiligo.com/vitiligo/ about 20% of the patients record shows that the got this skin problem due to inheritance its mean genetic factor is also involve in this skin condition.
As your wrote that your dad and his sister was affected by this skin problem it shows that it is running in your family and should contact to dermatologist and tell about diet plan and what nutrients should be present in your daily food.
I think vitamin B12 and zinc like things are better for vitiligo. "

" Hi, My son is 15 too and developed this condition. In fact I did post here how it got about and some of the many supposedly "treatments" natural remedies and dermatologist prescribed medications that we went through ( I ordered most of those herbal stuffs) I was deeply concerned as he was entering teenage hood and I don't want any psychological effect on him...We went through many dermatologist and tried as many alternative herbal remedies...none worked nor convincing enough. Bottom line is, I realize its something to do with our immune system. So I did a STRICT change in his/ our diet- NO MORE sodas, chips or any thing processed or artificial whatsoever- as he was concerned too he responsibly followed through with a healthy diet even in school- he used to love Tacos, hot dogs, bacon, burgers, etc the normal foods boys his age gobble-up but are so loaded with sodium nitrates and heavens knows what else toxic preservatives it contains....We really made an effort to go natural ( all organic) and the GOOD news is it really worked! It really made a difference. He is healthier, weight wise- more alert and active and except for that particular spot where it turned white ...it stopped. And we are not even concerned about it at all..lately I noticed it's starting to tan. Sometimes we moms simply have to take matters in our hands- I hope this sharing helps. "

" I agree with NsMum, Its all about your immune system, food allergies & toxins. I first got it when my house was sprayed for termites! )The chemical has since been banned). My mother also at the time developed a thyroid condition which is also an auto immune disease which I now also have the onset off. i personally don't eat much gluten or milk as i think I'm sensitive to it. " I have had Vitiligo for a few years, now- and I am also young, such as your son.
I have actually tried a simple steroid cream (applied to my few areas: legs, elbows, knees, thigh) and it did not help me very much.

I have grown to actually like my vitiligo, and I hardly notice it until someone says, "Hey- what's that?"

I'm not currently doing anything to try to get rid of it.
Tell your son (if this helps) to embrace it, and learn to love it! It's another quirk that makes him unique! "

" Hi, I'm new to this site, I'm 31 years old and was diagnosed around the age of 8. I have an olive complexion and my first spot was on my knee. Over the years I had a patch on each knee, both my feet have small patches, small area around my chin and hair line which a small part of hair turned white. In my late teens the patches that were on my knees went away. I've noticed in the last few months or so I'm getting some white patches around each of the cuticles of my nails. So I guess I'm a bit confused as to why some went away and now more spots are showing. Does anyone know why this would happen?
Thanks! "

" Hello people well I'm 35 and i have had vitilago since age 5 and yes it's hard to deal with when your young. Well I tried almost everything they have herbal and creams. Well doing my own research and finding a knowledgable dermatologist we came up with trying UV-B light treatments. And this is what's working for me I go three times a week it can get expensive but once u start seeing results it's worth it. Now this might not work for every case but having vitaligo for 30 years and seeing results over 90% of my spots was exciting. Look it up google it hey I hope this helps you all. Never give up hope and walk with your heads high peace. "
