Vegetarian/Vegan Reasons

Hey all! I'm new to this group, even though I've been a vegetarian most of my life.
I was wondering what everyone's reasons are for vegatarian/veganism? Mine is because I don't agree with animals being killed for food- as in this day and age, we have other ways and means of feeding ourselves nutritional diets without eating animals. And I hate it when people say "we're carnivores". We are not!! This is not the caveman days! My beliefs get stronger as I get older. Posted on 11/04/09, 02:11 pm |

I agree with your reasons, and also believe any cruelty or harm to the animal eaten can be transfered over vibrationally to the eater, like bad karma. I believe if we eat diseased, depressed animals it can cause us to feel that way. I don't want to contribute to the way animals for food are often treated.

I read Diet For a New America, by John Robbins. Great book! It gives plenty of reasons. Animal intelligence, the way they are treated, the crap they are fed and injected with, the crowded depressing conditions they live in. Health reasons, how most health problems are linked to meat eating, and finally, the environmental impact of America's obsession with animal protein.

That's an interesting theory Loved1. You could be right. I'm quite a spiritual person so can see where your theory would sit true. It'd be interesting to find out statistics of numbers of people suffering depression or illnesses and see how many of them eat meat. Quite possibly a very high number.

I had been working toward it, and when I read the chapters in "Fast Food Nation" about meat-packing plants, and looked at my beloved pets and how intelligent and loving they are, that was it for me.

I have several reasons for attempting this.
1. It is healthier and my hubby has HCV and Cirrhosis. So we are trying to eat better to keep him stronger. 2. I am Pre-Diabetic and want to stave off crossing over. 3. I'm beginning to view eating meat as gross. That said, as far as the last one is concerned, I think if we lived on a farm and were able to slaughter only what we needed to survive in a humane way....it wouldn't bother me so much. But I don't know, because lately, I cannot even stomach walking past the meat cases at the grocery lately.

I agree that living on a farm (or hunting for food) is totally different than eating factory-farmed, mass produced and slaughtered, mistreated and potentially unhealthy animals turned into meat.
I can also relate to feeling sick when near the meat cases at the store. I avoid going near them at all costs.

I am one of the few non-ethical vegans I know... The industry does not bother me, though I understand the stances, and opinions of those that it does.
I am a vegan because I had lost a dangerous amount of weight... 196 to 135 in less than four months... No DX for the weight loss, yet. So my doc told me to radically change my diet. He did tell me that most animal products are hard on the body to process, and I've found truth in this... the weight loss has stopped and I;ve even seen some slight gains. Even when, and if, I get a proper dx and treatment I will stay a vegan. I like the food better. I enjoy the challenge of cooking. I am enjoying this. And if I can contribute to the ethical vegans cause.... then bully for me...

I am not yet a vegetarian but have been very bothered about eating meat recently and don't know what i should do. I suddenly feel that its very wrong to eat meat from animals such as cows when most of us would be horrified by the process of slaughtering and butchering and would see this as a bad deed if it happened to a dog and yet we support it everyday by eating the meat that we dont think about where it comes from

Wow! There are so many good reasons... so many new names for me to recognize... I haven't been on for a while, and I was just coming back to refresh my support network. I needed to remember the reasons why I love being a vege. I fell off the wagon for a while because of a few peices of bacon... but then i remembered why, and i need all the support I can get on this one! switching "teams" is not an easy thing!
