I have PCOS.

I’ve had my period since last June (not normal with PCOS.)

I had been seeing a doctor 2 years ago for my pcos & it was starting to get under control, but then I lost my job (downsizing) & in turn lost my insurance & had no money for frivolous things like health care.

Here in Mass, if you’re not pregnant, disabled or dying, the state run health care won’t help you… I spent the entire time I was on unemployment battling mass health. They said they would give me coverage if I had cancer, but would help me get screened. At the time my husband was battling for SSDI & he had mass health, but I was the only one with money coming in (even if it was barely enough to keep afloat.)

I finally got another good, stable job in June & ever since I’ve had the never ending period. It’s made me anemic, & weak.

I finally got my insurance back & saw my previous doctor… He’s worried. I had an ultrasound just before x-mass & it showed a thickening lining of the uterus. He wants to do a biopsy to get a baseline as to where it’s at right now. He said that it can lead to Endometrial Cancer.

So I naturally have a few Questions:

1) Was you cancer started by something else (like endometriosis, or pcos)? If I do end up eventually being dxn’d, it won’t have been an “out of the blue” thing for me, but did any one here have that happen.
2) What type of testing did you have?
3) What was the time period between you knowing something was wrong to you actually being dxn’d?

" My periods had been sporadic..they stopped and started over a couple of years and I assumed and so did my doctor that it was menopause. Then I had a pap test which showed abnormal glandular cells (ASGUS) I was sent for a Colposcopy April 23 2007, 6 weeks later I was given a diagnosis of Uterine cancer, 6 weeks later a radical hysterectomy followed by radiation therapy. I actually had no symptoms at all except for the sporadic periods. "

" I'd had irregular periods for years. Docs before had told me it was because I wasn't ovulating regularly. Started out with months on end of no period then hellish ones. Last year or so it had reversed to weeks long light periods. Finally got in to see the doc and an ultrasound showed thickening in my uterus. We did a d&c to clean it out and the biopsy came back clean, no cancerous cells. Did a PAP 2 1/2 months later which also came back clear.

2 1/2 months later when seeing a fertility doc I was officially diagnosed with PCOS and started treatment for diabetes and hypothyroidism both complications of the PCOS. We did another sonogram the next month to make sure my uterus was still ok so we could start fertility treatments to help my husband and I get pregnant. This sonogram showed it thickening again as well as polups. He did a d&c and this time the biopsy came back with cancer. I ended up having a hysterectomy which saved me since this came in agressive and was already showing signs of being about to spread.

My doc told me that though PCOS and the thickening of the uterus doesn't CAUSE cancer but it does provide the perfect environment for it to grow so you should be tested and keep tabs on it. In my case a clean biopsy and then a clean PAP was followed 3 months later with cancer in the same area. A d&c and biopsy is the easiest way to make sure if the cells are present and the sooner you know, the better your chances are at survival. I had to go through a full hysterectomy at 35, but because we acted fast I don't have to go through chemo or radiation. Good luck to you . "

" My periods were fairly normal: sometimes 5 or 6 weeks apart, sometimes 4 weeks on the nose, always relatively light and never overly painful. I had my annual pap test in February, and it showed ASGUS. Like JackieG054 below, I was sent for colposcopy on March 9 2009, and on March 13 2009 I was diagnosed with uterine cancer. The gynocologist said "early cancer"--but this has to just be her theory, as she said the cancer cells were "scattered...they were there but not prominent".

The gynocologist and my primary care physician are both shocked and surprised at the diagnosis, mainly because of my age (45) and that I have had no abnormal bleeding.

My risk factors are that I'm a white female and I'm overweight.

I have been referred to a gyno-oncologist and will most likely see him next week sometime. Beyond hysterectomy, I have no idea what other treatment I will have. "

" I was never diagnosed with PCOS, but I had irregular periods my whole reproductive life to that point, then one month I had my period for the entire month. I had a D&C, and was diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia (abnormal excessive growth of uterine tissue). From there they tried to control with high doses of progesterone, but it didn't work. Within six months, through 2 endo-biopsies and another D&C, I was diagnosed with Stage 1 uterine cancer and had a radical hysterectomy. I do advise you to be your own advocate; the first physician I saw dismissed me easily because I was so young. Thanks to my family I pursued it further and I feel fortunate that I was stage 1 because of it. I don't know what it could have turned into had I not pursued it myself so diligently. That is my advice to you-you know yourself better than anyone, and if you feel off, please do what you can to get someone to help or listen to your concerns. Good luck! "

" In my case, I had PCOS. Dx w/ hyperplasia in January,2005. Biopsy in march showed atypical complex cells(pre-cancerous),opted for TAH, which was scheduled in June. Pathology found stage 1 cells. So for me the time was from february to june.
I didn't go through a d&c, due to my body's tendency to develop excessive scar tissue.
Be sure to explore every option available and do what's best for your own body.
Blessings to you. "

" I've read all of your experiences and it makes me wonder even more if I have cancer. My period hasn't stopped for a month an a half. I'm on provera and metofirim to regulate it. But its not working and I don't know what else it could be. They can't do a pap because i can't stop bleeding. please any advice would be great "
