Dear Robyn. I am a grandmother raising a 7 year old and also had the experience of having a 9 yr old son when his sister had cancer at age 17. I learned with my son that kids know alot more than we think they do but they can misinterpret what they hear. My son heard us talking about kidney failure and thought his sisters' knees weren't going to work anymore! I found that all major hospitals have sibling/family cancer support groups which help the kids alot. I personally feel that our children need to know that we are working on getting well and most imprtantly, that there is other people that can take care of them when we can't. Kids are as worried about themselves as they are about us!

I was just diagnosed 4 days ago and more than worrying about myself I worry about leaving my children. I have told my 17 year old my 10 year old I have told nothing too. I want to wait until after my surgery and staging before I knew what to say.
