The American College of OB/GYN released practice guidelines for treatment of endometrial cancer..first published in Aug 2005 so treatment is fairly standardized. What is comforting as an internist to know is that 90% of patients develop symptomatic bleeding or discharge that alerts us to a problem. The incidence is expected to rise with the rising incidence of obesity.

" I have to add my two cents as it seems to be a recurring theme: little to no symptoms. I'm 45, and the only abnormality I had in my periods were sometimes they were further apart. Sometimes 4 weeks, sometimes 5, 6 or even more. I'd never had an abnormal pap until this last one in February, which lead me to have colposcopy, which came back positive for cancer (favoring uterine).

I never had crazy heavy or painful periods, no spotting in between, no family history of gyn cancers (or any cancer for that matter).

I have to agree with a couple of posters: seems like ultrasound should be done on a yearly basis, just like mammography, after age 35 or 40, to keep better track of changes to the cervix, uterus, ovaries, and tubes.

I'm scheduled to have a radical hysterectomy on April 10, and feel so lucky and grateful that this was caught early. "

" I am only 29 but with a history of severe endometriosis. Recently, I
was on my period for 30 days. When it finally stopped, my primary did an u/s and discovered a cyst on my left ovary (which I know can be no big deal, had many) and that my linning was measuring on the thicker side. After that, sex became extremely painful and I am now spending the bulk of my day w/ a heating pad on my pelivs. I go in on fri to consult w/ a gyn, and set a biopsy. What is your opinion on all of this. I am totally freaked out. I have 3 kids under 6 and can't imagine this at all.

thanks so much. "
