I find it amazing that regardless of what you are applying for anymore, you HAVE to have some kind of degree or certificate for even the $10 an hour jobs.
Seriously? How am I supposed to feel motivated to find a job when first of all, I have no degree/certificate and secondly $10 is not going to support my family! I have just enrolled in school and am waiting to hear from FAFSA as to how many credit hours I will be able to take this fall...... in the meantime...I have 3 kids and only unemployment to support us.. Hi Kids! I totally understand what you mean. I am not unemployed but I have a bunch of friends who are. Its brutal out there. I have an associates degree and thats not even enough. These days you need a bachelors degree (the new associates!) and a masters. In 2015, nursing educators are required to have a doctorate to teach (new nurse educators in colleges). My nurse educators all have masters or they have been grandfathered in. I wake up everyday and I get so scared that I would lose my admin job at my hospital. There are too many cutbacks, especially with healthcare. The NYS healthcare commission came and gave us a list of all the closing hospitals by November 2011, mine is one of them. Oh, I will have a job (I hope!) .....we are all going to Buffalo General Hospital (2 site hospital nursing education in 1 department - thats 15 people!!).We shall see what happens. Scarry world.

Does it even really matter anymore? I have two Master degrees and experience to die for and I can't even land a job pushing carts for a grocery store. Seriously, I can't take this anymore.

Sometimes a big degree isn't near as important as taking certain specific classes these days... depending on how old you are.... they have classes geared toward non-traditional students (anyone over 25-30 basically LOL... sadly that's me now) *sniff* HAHA
For instance.... if you need computer knowledge, they'll teach basics to web design, to certain computer programs, to all of it !! Me.... I have 2 degrees, currently not able to use either of them, but planning on going into "deaf ministry", (like as a chaplain working with the deaf).... so I'll working on my chaplain CPE and getting certified in sign language... I don't need a big expensive school or degree for that.... Figure out what exactly you're looking toward and start searching, check with a nearby college.... a lot of them teach online classes now too or off-sight camera classes.... a lot more options now to do just exactly what you're needing and no extras.... Then if you can prove just how valuable you are in your resume and your letter.... they might actually consider you - background or not!! ....I've seen crazier things that have happened. I got hired on while I was off doing my internship six hours away, mind you..... at the college I was going to.... as a fulltime computer lab aide when I came home... at 22 while I finished my last two classes.... at that age, and in that town, that was actually a pretty great job that landed in my lap at that time. 80% of the time I believe... it's who you know not what you know! I've walked into places that aren't advertising and ask for an application, and asked if someone was actually available to talk to ... to see if there was jobs available.... and I've gotten hired at the door like that !!! Good luck everyone! Keep your chins up!! (and yes, I can still say that after being unemployed nearly 7 months now) :)

absolutely it's who you know - but if you can figure out who you need to know and where they hang out you can get to know them... It so works.
