How layoffs are handled

I think they're coming again at my old workplace. I heard that one person went into the boss & said "I can't get laid off, I have kids." OK, I understand you are responsible for their care. However, many with kids have been put in this unfortunate situation and they didn't want it either. Makes me think I was let go as I don't have any kids so I don't "matter." Now others I used to work with that don't have kids have a fear they are easily tossed away. My point is, none of this is right. Maybe I should have marched in there & said "Hey, I don't have family or a second income, so don't let me go."

" A few weeks before I was let go the pres called a meeting and told all of us not to worry, that we were making a good profit in the economy and that he didn't forsee anyone getting a layoff..the very next week he laid a full time machinist off. So which is it?? You have the money for your employees or you don't?? "
