I was wondering if anyone has had neck pain . I seem to have irritated nerves in the occipital, right at the base on neck on the affected side. Due to the Masseter(which is innervated by the culprit the TN cranial nerve) being in constant nerve pain I have muscle spasms so severe I feel like my jaw will break. My neurosurgeon feels this nothing to do with the nerve compression that showed up on MRI. I can eat only soft foods and sometimes I just drink Slimfast. But the temp has to be room temp or the masseter will so start to pulsate so badly it makes me crazy.
Am I the only one that has this strange affliction. 10 year ago dentist pulled the back teeth thinking that was the root of the pain. Wrong!! Posted on 10/23/09, 06:10 pm |

I am so sorry for all the pain you are having. I have bilateral- TN, but, I do occasionally have arm and neck pain on one side. I also have Fibromyalgia, so I just blamed it on that. Maybe it is TN related.
I have a question, maybe a dumb one but I'm gonna ask it. The teeth you had pulled, do you still hurt in the teeth sockets. Just like you did when the teeth were still there. Or is it strictly in the side area (the cheek area )of the gum? I hope I have conveyed this so it is understandable. Thanks for listening and I pray you get healed soon of this awful pain. God Bless, T

Yes I still have the same pain as if teeth were still there. The teeth were healthy, which is the shame of it. losing perfectly good teeth. The dentist must have thought the bottom one was pressing on some nerves . the top one had to come out becasue no lower tooth to connect with which would make the remaining to get longer. Sounds wierd, but that is what I was told. He was getting close to me dx a nerve problem, but he is skilled only in dentistry and not skilled enough to send me to a neurolgist then. Now It is like phamtom pain, I guess.Since you mention it , Interestly the pain seems to be the gum . I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia when the jaw pain was lurking and I hold my body in a fight or flight position due to pain, so I guess I have some Fibro as a seconday dx. I have always wondered if they can cure t my TN, as I have been misdx,d and only found out in July I have TN,whether I wd hv the Fibro symptoms
Sometimes there is so much history with me, it has been 10 yrs going to Dr to Dr. I sympathize with on the Fibro and TN. God Bless you and God blessings us all. There must be a reason for us to suffer. It does make you strong even sometimes you feel weak trying to deal with it all. Prayers to you.

I just had to Google masseter... glad I did because I'm having exactly the same constant spasms. The only thing that seems to ease it is to look up at the ceiling and give my neck a really good stretch.
I think it is very likely that this is linked to the TN - although I haven't been seen by the neurologist yet (bless the NHS waiting times, heh?), I don't think they can really say what is and what isn't a 'classic' symptom of TN, because all the reading I've done suggests that a) even the 'experts' can't agree on a common set of symptoms, b) they don't have a clue what really causes it in every case, and hence c) not all the 'cures' work for everyone every time. It seems to be such an individual thing.

In fact, if you look at the diagram on this page, you can quite clearly see one of the nerves going right down to the 'submaxillary gland'... right where i'm getting that pain!

Thks for ya'lls reply. I agree about the experts don't have any hard fast guidlines on causes TN as I research this deeper. THanks for website: I had not seen how the TN can be involved from that perspective. Very interesting and enlightening.
I hope your pain gets better and/or goes away. We have to stay hopeful even though some days it is tough, tough!!

If you liked that diagram, take a look at these ones! Most diagrams show you a very basic map of the (trigeminal) facial nerves, but these show you all the little branches. You can see why TN causes so many different symptoms...

Wow thank you all. I thought I was the only one who had fibromyalgia with TN. I had the neck issues last year with sever presure headaches. I was a mess. I was trying Soma muscle relaxers. My neurologist gave me baclofen. The baclofen with ibuprophen was very helpful. it took a few weeks but the baclofen was a wonder drug for me. I feel like a drug store but i am learning what to take when to keep different pain from starting up. good luck i hope my experience will give you some insight or help.
