Hormones (Testosterone)

Hey everyone its EJ, with just some questions as usual. The more I find out in becoming transgender, the better.

Hormones....We all have them. But as I was watching a youtube video on this gir who is FTM, she started getting Testosterone treatments, like injections of testosterone. Anyway she recorded her long process on the hormones and it was amazing how she changed. I was stunned and amazed at the same time.

My question is those who are FTM's did you do hormone treatments?
I haven't really figured out what I want, hence the reason I'm asking alot of questions about these things.

If I were to start transitioning woud the testosterone be considered as a steroid? I'm a very active person, and I'm in college. As well as know steroids are illegal. So when it comes to sports on the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), and NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) the use of any of that is illegal blah blah blah and you will be banned from the sports team. I will be participating on the sports team at any college I attend.

My apologies if I didn't phrase that question right. I just want to know really if I should to ever start Hormone treatment with testosterone, would it be considered to be steroids, I guess. If that makes sense

Plz comment, Thank you!

Danielle "EJ"

" Oh okay. No its good its not steroid, If I were to ever go on it, I wouldn't want to jeopardize my athletic career. That was my main concern.

Thank you! "

" Ej,

FYI, I do not know if anyone has told you but before you can even see the other side of a needle, you'll need to be professionally diagnosed by a certified gender specialist, that is the first thing that should have before you even come out as trans.

For no other reason than to know for certain that is what is indeed going on with you at the moment. If you have not done it yet, I strongly suggest you do.

" Thank you Wolfiepa. I already knew that to even start any of the treatments you need get a clearing with a gender specialist, doctor, therapist etc. However I will not be doing any hormone treatment. I'm taking my own first steps by binding my chest. That's a good start for me. "

" My boyfriend is FTM!! He hasn't started hormones yet but when he does there will be alot of changes. "T" is not a steroid. It simply replaces your hormones that are already in your body. If you are FTM, it replaces the estrogen in your body. If you are MTF, you take estrogen tablets that replaces the testosterone. But if you are going to start any sport, I would wait until you started the hormone replacements or wait to take the replacements until after you are done. I hope that this will help you. "

" Actually tori, Estrogen tablets don't replace T like you seem to think. Coming from a tgirl on hormones you actually have to take T blockers for the estrogen to work its full potential.

I mean don't get me wrong I had lower testosterone than the average man when I started, but I still have to take testosterone blockers. And I started when I was 18, so I'm lucky I didn't really develop a deep voice or much muscle. Leg hair pubic hair and armpit hair with some facial hair is all I got.

But like I said you do have to take testosterone blockers if you're MtF, not just estrogen alone. I mean I know someone who took estrogen alone and got breasts but it didn't really do much else for her. "

" My surgeon claims testosterone is a steroid - thus he's blocked my using it until after I heal up from surgery.

Even a normal female's body produces some amount of testosterone in the ovaries and adrenal glands. It's what triggers the "fight or flight" response, and any sense of aggression - even the lesser levels seen in competitions like sports, or competing for the attentions of the same guy.

In a biological female, it is simply less than is made in most biological males - and is counteracted by the estrogen so it has less effect on the female body. Usually. There are always exceptions, like the intersexed.

So, my reluctant surgeon claims testosterone is a steroid. Personally, I doubt it would affect my healing like he suggests - otherwise, most guys wouldn't be able to heal injuries.

If you really want an answer to this question, look it up in a medical text in the library's reference section. Or look up testosterone in the encyclopedia; it might answer the question. "

" Thank you everyone. With making my "It Gets Better for you and me " video on youtube, and talking to some close friends, I dont want any testosterone treatments. I don't want to drastically change, not that I'd regret it, but i feel better knowing that "yes i'm very manly on the inside" and I'm okay with that. I've been told I look androgynous, so with that I feel pretty happen with me so far.

Thank you all for the advice "
