While I myself am not a trasgender I have someone very close to me that is. I've known a lot about it for quiet some time. And now he is thinking on hormore replacement therapy. And I guess I'm curious to if it majorly changes ones personality? Will it make alot of things change or will he over all be the same while doing this? Be honest and thanks in advance for any answers.

" scannon,

I am going here on the assumption that your friend is Female to Male if not, then someone else will have to address it because I'm only FTM and I am not familiar with estrogen HRT.

HRT changes one's personality without a doubt, as well, as change body features. Testosterone tends to make one more aggressive and quick to get angry, for the first years of HRT, after that it tends to level off, that is provided that the issues regarding adjustment and transition problems have been worked out.

It also changes the way a person thinks, that is females tend to think in abstract terms, seeing the big picture, etc, males tend to think linearly, a begets b begets c, hence why they tend to get into things that are foolish more readily like war, money schemes, stupid affairs because they not stop to think of all the angles before making a decision, females tend to process things to death, it's in the way their brain is arranged, they have to because the survival of their young depends on it. Males,on the other hand all they can think about is sex and war, it seems.

And that brings me to having a hyper sex drive which will change your friend's personality, because in the first years, he'll be most likely to be preoccupied with getting laid. He may or may not turn into a jerk, it all depends on how well he is able to handle the HRT.

He'll also look more masculine, but the most interesting aspect would be that he'll be mostly less emotional than now, testosterone is a very powerful hormone and it tends to deaden emotional displays, like before HRT I was able to cry easily, now, it's actually an ordeal to get myself to cry if at all. That's not good because every now and then a good hearty cry is good for your mental health,. I can feel the emotion, it is simply very difficult to show it outwardly.

The other concerns should be those of a health nature such as: the risk for heart attacks goes up 35%, his cholesterol level will skyrocket mine went from 120 to 160 in less than 6 months and it climbed steadily to 200 in a matter of 25 years, you may not think is much but it is, specially if your cholesterol level was less than 130 for 30 years prior to that.

I've managed to keep it to 200 with diet and exercise but it's a constant vigilance, nevertheless. He may or may not lose his hair, he may or may not grow body hair, his voice will lower and his body fat will be redistributed to harden his looks if you get what I am saying. He'll have to get his blood tested every 6 months to see where his testosterone levels are and also his cholesterol levels.

He'll also have to have a hysterectomy sooner rather than later because testosterone atrophies the ovaries (that means shrinks) so the risk of ovarian cancer is extremely high as a result. It will have to be a total hysterectomy, of course.

This should be done within the first two years of HRT to minimize the risk but since he'll be under the supervision of a qualified endocrinologist, he'll be able to determine exactly when the procedure should be done for the maximum benefit.

Also if he still has periods after HRT and has not had a hysterectomy, he should get himself checked for either fibroid tumors and/or endometriosis and he'll be more likely to be suggested a hysterectomy to correct the problem. Last but not least, once he has the hysterectomy he'll need to be on HRT for the test of his life.

Pretty much what I am saying is that the person you are looking at now will no longer be there a year from now, eventually he'll sound, act and look so different that you'll be a bit shocked at what you are looking at. So tell your friend if he is FTM to proceed with caution regarding HRT because some testosterone effects are irreversible and it should not be taken lightly or in haste. I hope that your friends gets properly diagnosed, as well.
