Please list the reasons you think cause grinding. Mine were this combination:
1. Anxiety 2. Depression 3. Smoking 4. Alcohol Though removing reasons 3 and 4 lessened the bruxism a lot but whenever I have anxiety before sleeping I brux a lot a hear a loud click when I open my mouth in the morning. Also I would like to know how a single person can evaluate the daily progress of bruxism. I know about BiteStrip but that is too expensive and is only for one time use. I was thinking if there is a electronic device that hears the noise all night and points out whether you were bruxing in the morning. I clench and grind because I am an Aspie. (For those who don't know, that means diagnosed Aperger's syndrome) and it is a stim (stim: sensory self-stimulation) When I was a kid in school, a teacher would hit me when she saw me engaging in any overt stims (bouncing foot, rocking, etc) so I was left with one she couldn't see, which was clenching and grinding. It has cost me a lot: I have lost one tooth and have crowns on two others, plus it aggravates gum recession.

PS: I think anxiety adds to it - I grind a lot more when I'm anxious.

all my family grits teeth....mine when i'm tired...it's a relaxation thing. I will say that my 3 year old grits too....and she's under NO stress..is VERY loved...I think genetics have more effect than lifestyle....

I read somewhere that grinding could be due to deficiency of magnesium, has anybody heard that and tried taking supplements?

I take calcium/magnesium supplements, and that hasn't helped me, which I suppose was down to the fact that my grinding is not from that cause, but from my being Aspergers, which is on the autistic spectrum. Many of us grind compulsively, which is a self-stimulating activity.

Hi Everyone,
After reading everyones' issues, I would recommend trying out mouth guards (night guard, sports guard, or even a general guard) for teeth grinding, teeth, clenching, and bruxism. I know of a company that specializes in mouth guards for bruxism, called TotalGard. Google "TotalGard - Bruxism". You should be able to fine a lot on this and maybe even buy a comfortable product! -CG

I'm surprised at the amount of product shilling going on on this board!
I grind for stress, alcohol makes it worse. I've heard its genetic, my dad and his twin both grind. I've bit through a one soft gaurd, and just cracked a hard one. I did use a product for a while called grindalert that 'measures' your griding (I could see eg that the numbers on the machine doubled with alcohol. In theory you can also use the machine to 'train' yourself to react (and stop grinding) when it beeps at you in your sleep when you start grinding. I never had the discipline to train myself correctly. Interested to hear whats worked for other people. I tried accupuncture for a while and it worked for a bit, it seemed to do a great job to 'release' the muscle when it was quite tense, but didnt stop it. Am considering the botox at some point.
