De-stressing NOT clenching

So many things I've read indicate that stress is a major factor in clenching and grinding....
Ok, so I've tried all the destressing exercising I know and I'm still waking up with jaws almost locked (can't lock because of an upper and lower mouthguard). But I have headaches and jaw aches..... Anybody have a de-stressing exercise or technique that works for you. Please share. THANKS Posted on 05/05/09, 12:05 am |

diggingout,
As you can probably imagine, there are millions of other Americans that suffer from clenching and grinding. You are correct that these activities can be provoked by stress. The traditional treatment for your symptoms would include anti-inflammatories, soft food diet, exercises as well as full arch bite guards. While all this can help some, there is a dental appliance for clenching and grinding that is FDA approved for headaches. It's called the NTI-tss Plus. Because your full arch guard gives you an ideal surface to clench on, it can exacerbate your symptoms. The NTI is a small, taco shaped shell that fits over the upper or lower four teeth. It's primary purpose is to keep the back teeth apart which in turn reduces the intensity of clenching. Hopefully this helps. You can learn more at www.theheadacheremedy.com or ask your dentist about it. Good luck and I hope you like this device as much as my wife does. Let me know if you have any other questions

Thanks for the response. THe NTI-tss looks interesting. The full mouth guard that I wear is suppose to reduce sleep apnea. So unfortunately I don't see it going away anytime soon. The guard is built to keep the back teeth apart. In fact there is a button type thing on both sides to keep the teeth separated. I have only had the guards about a month and have worn down the button quite a bit. My dentist tells me to exercise more and de-stress. Easier said then done.
