" There are a number of theories regarding the root cause of tinnitus, but basically there has to be some disturbance of electro-chemical transmission with some form of hyperpolarisation or upgrading .Any chemical that targets some aspect of the process is worth investigating under normal clinical trials. " Pretty wild stuff this appamine.

Apamin is a neurotoxic polypeptide of known structure isolated from bee venom. Shuba and coworkers have recently shown that it abolishes the hyperpolarising action of externally-applied ATP on visceral smooth muscle (guinea pig stomach and taenia coli) as well as the hyperpolarisation (inhibitory junction potential) that follows stimulation of the non-adrenergic inhibitory nerve supply to these tissues. As it has been proposed that ATP is the neurotransmitter involved in the latter response, Vladimirova and Shuba tentatively concluded that apamin is a specific postsynaptic blocking agent of this non-adrenergic, possibly 'purinergic', inhibition. We have confirmed the important observation that nanomolar concentrations of apamin reduce inhibition by ATP and by non-adrenergic nerve stimulation, but further experiments suggest that, rather than acting as a specific blocker of ATP receptors, apamin inhibits the increase in potassium permeability caused by a number of agents, including ATP.

We should all just go out and get stung by bee's then, lol.

" Also just because they are applying for a patent doesnt mean we will see it in our lifetime. Plus its probably gonna be just as expensive as all the other treatments out there. Its not going to cure tinnitus. It would be a pill or a shot that you get every now and again.

" Hello Mandie,

I was hoping the discussion would pick up on the Tinnitus Support forum but it looks to be dead. I don’t have a background in Pharmaceutical Chemistry nor am I a patent attorney. I’m just a dumb programmer with T too stupid to listen to my music at a safe level but I’ll try to explain it. As I understand it, the patent is simply for a substance named apamine. When looked up, Apamine is defined as one of the peptides, assumed to be toxic, in bee venom. When DarkSon said: “We should all just go out and get stung by bee's then” he was jokingly correct as to what the patent is about. Believe it or not, venom has been used to help with other afflictions so there may be a possibility these guys are onto something. Who knows?

Then under the description, paragraph 6 explains the objective of the invention and then it goes on to briefly explain the objective of the other paragraphs as to patent objectives and claims. Bottom line, all the paragraphs explain how their patent is different and how it works differently than other patients. As DarkSon correctly points out, we may not see this anytime soon. My intention for this post was to merely give the board an interesting topic to follow while instilling hope that there IS work actively going on. I truly believe there is more attention being given to this affliction now than ever before. I hope this helps. Happy Mother’s Day!! "
