I don't know about you but whenever I write a check to a non profit I wonder how much of my dollar goes towards research. I recently asked the ATA the following questions but have yet to hear back. Since we are trying to live in an age of transparency I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a non profit to release such information. If you agree email them and ask some questions.

1. How much on the dollar goes towards research?

2. Do you publish a financial statement for your members to view?

2. What is the salary breakdown for your staff?

3. What kind of accountability measures do you have built into your research grants?

4. Do you keep members posted of the progress of the research grants?

I will continue to be a member but believe they owe their supporters this information. Is this unreasonable?

" Thats not unreasonable at all. I have had questions about orginizations such as the ATA and RNID and others as well, plus other Orgs that have nothing to do with tinnitus. Their goal is to cure a disease. Well what happens when they cure the disease? They will stop recieving free money, and they will all be out of a job. I sometimes question their integrety. Plus the fact you say you haven't recieved a reply. "

" I have taken the Tinnitus today mag. for several years now.
First of all, I think the publication has some information, but for thirtyfive dollars for three publications a year is not getting enough information for the buck. And a lot of it is advertisement.
I would like to understand where the money goes also, and I will call and ask. I have called there before, and I get the same lady who seems to know the organization fairly well. "

" Hi All, I dont know how the ATA does it but recently I got a phone call from Cancer Research and all I could give is 10 dollars and about two weeks after I kept receiving phone calls asking me when I was going to mail in the money, well I kinda got mad and asked them how much of my 10 dollars was really going to the research and they told me about 2 dollars the rest was for the staff. Needless to say I will never give any monies unless I know for sure alll the money will be going towards the cause. All these years I have been giving I bet was the same way!!! "

" Hi Mark,
You absolutely have the right to know where your money is going. And they should be responsible enough to offer the information to you.
I thought they were well thought out questions.
Way to go! "

" I suspect you may be dissappointed if you do a bit of checking:

The annual financial reports will tell you what % of ATA funds are expended on research. What % are spent on lobbying, What % are spent on administration etc.......

http://www.bbb.org/charity-reviews...

http://www.scsos.com/index.asp?n=3...

suggest you Google ATA annual financial report.

From memory I think in 06 they spent approx 10% on research.

My own opinion is that the ATA and similar do not have the financial resources to fund every research project on tinnitus, but it can act as a catylist by providing some funding that might result in Government grants for further research. I believe this has happened on a number of occasions. "

" Makes me wonder why I always thought that the ATA was a bunch of money sucking low-lifes. I bet the ATA owns more property than all of us T sufferers together. The way I see it is like this. If there is a cure for it the ATA wouldnt exist any longer and they'd all be outta alot of jobs and money.

" So where shall I put my money so that all of it will go into research? Is there any serious research going on in the world right now? "

" I can't find the link. I'm sure if I did some digging though I could find it again.
Anyway:
The ATA 2006 Annual Financial Report.
They spent 27% of expenses on fundraising, 12% on management, 18% on support, 11% on research, 10% on advocacy, 26% on education.. The Support was courtesy of the FDL Tinnitus Fund which was scuttled when the new CEO was appointed.

Whatever your opinion is of the ATA, you have no other organisation in the US that I know of that is there to represent you. "
