Since returning to work as a teacher, my tinitus has been through the roof. I can't sleep through the night. It has been three months since the accident. Still, I am sensitive to noise. Still, people talking and electronic noises make the ringing go UP high. Still, there are nights I can't sleep.
When I am home in quiet, the ringing goes way down. Since returning to work, i yearn to get that quiet back, but the ringing takes its place. My doctors have do not return calls anymore. They can't make any more money off of me! I cannot tell if I am damaging my ears more. When I don't work, I can sleep. When I do work, the ringing stays high and keeps me up. What do I do??? Can I expect it to get better? Posted on 06/14/12, 01:06 pm |

How about wearing some earplugs to work, maybe cut a regular one in half, so you could still hear your students.

I do wear them, but it doesn't stop the ringing from increasing. It starts to increase in small groups of people. In large groups, it increases a lot!

Remember anxiety can increase your T a lot. Just this morning I was dreaming and I woke up and my T was really loud because of the dream. It quieted down after that. So I definitely know it can increase due to anxiety and stress. Maybe you can take a mild sedative to ease your anxiety. I use xanaz and it works great. Try everything before losing your job.

You state in your post you are sound sensitive. Treating the hyperacusis (sound sensitivity) might help. Have you talked to an audiologist about this? It's only been three months, which for many, is not that long. It seems like forever but my first three months were quite like yours, stressful, anxiety filled, sleep deprived. Over time it usually does get better. Hang in there.

Are you nuts? Teaching with tinnitus????!!! Lord I hope it's university and not high school or primary or you are just asking for trouble. I'd say find another job.. tutor.. work with deaf kids.. anything but do NOT work in a high school or a primary, screaming kids have caused many cases of tinnitus to begin.
If it's university or ya know, generally quiet... i'd say you need a major vacation.. let your ears rest 6+ months then go back with earplugs handy if it gets loud, or just don't be afraid to hold your hands to your ears.. i do it 20x a day in public feel sorta lame but who cares, noise makes me buzz away too.

What decibel hearing plug would you recommend for screaming kids? My doctor makes custom fit ones in three Db of protection. Is it okay to wear plugs every day? Thanks for the help.

Just watch how long you plug your ears for. You can increase sound sensitivity if you plug them too long because our brains crave sound and if it doesnt get it it can raise its own internal volume resulting in louder tinnitus.
