Does anti-depressant Celexa make Tinnitus worse?

I've had tinnitus since I was 15 and had a bad ear infection. Now I'm 69 now so I'm pretty familiar with it. I've only taken Celexa for 10 days but it seems like it is getting louder. I wondered if anyone else had that experience with Celexa. I read the side-effects on-line and one was infrequent tinnitus.
I've been taking Lipo-Flavinoids for about 3 months now, I don't see much help there but thought I'd give it the 6 months they recommend. Thanks for advice, this is a new experience for me to be in a support group. Posted on 05/12/09, 12:05 am |

We are so sorry about your son's passing. I wonder if stress has accumulated to where the antidepressant and the grief have caused your tinnitus to increase? There are so many antidepressants you could try - for some reason some people on the web believe Pamelor lowers their tinnitus as well as other tricyclics - I wonder if you would do well or better with those. Have you considered joining the bereavement board here? I think there are alot of people who would like to chat with you and pray for you during these difficult days ahead. God bless, Mandie

Hello Quilter32 and welcome to Daily Strength. I lost my 13 year old brother when I was 15 and my first born son 22 years ago (passed 2 days after birth) whom I named after my deceased brother in his memory. Both were very devastating to me so I have a pretty good idea what you’re going through. I went through a period of insomnia and the depression as well but thankfully I didn’t have tinnitus at the time. Unfortunately, all of us tinnitus suffers' know all too well how both can cause the tinnitus noise level to increase. I looked up the med you’re taking and some articles say the ringing may stop in about two weeks so if you can hang in there, I’d give it one more week. Plus as I understand it, anti-depressants can take a bit to “kick in” so maybe by that time the depression may decrease some allowing you to sleep which in turn will hopefully lower the noise level. If the noise level doesn’t decrease after the third week, I would suggest you not stop taking the Celexa but rather ask your doctor if he/she can prescribe a different medication. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. God bless.

When I had my anxiety attack in sept08 my doctor put me on lexapro. Its a cousin of celexa. I really refrain from using prescriptions so I only took half the dosage and upped my vitamin intake drastically. It took time and in december I weened off the lexapro. I believe the lexapro made the tinnitus worse as do alot of antidepressants.
Now I just take my vitamins and 5-htp. The 5-htp does help with depression. It also takes the edge off of the tinnitus anxiety for me. I started taking claritin-d again a few days back and the noise was down to a glimmer of a wind chime. But today it is back up to a nuisance. All prescription antidepressants can have horrible withdrawal effects so please be informed and very careful in your choices. Pat
