AGE 58 MALE

12/08 nodule from dopler of neck found, 8/09 took sonogtam of thyroid and found a hypoechic isthmus 1.5 cm nodule

FNB by endo 9/09 found a 1.5 cm hurthle cell neoplasm-very cellular mostly hurthle cells, with prominent nuclui, occasional groves and pleomorphism and scant colloid. Dfferential diagnosis includes hurthle adema, cancer or less likley hyperplasia. Was told i need 1/2 thyroid removed to see if it was cancer

1)What should I do take it out, leave it, monitor it. So confused. Is it cancer, will it turn to cancer. No symptoms, no other nodules. HavE you been in this situation. Will I need thyroid medicine With 1/2 loeb left. If It is still encapsaled but cancer can I still leave in left loeb. I DO NOT WANT RAI 131 ABILATION PERION. IF FORCED TO TAKE 2ND LOEB OUT. WILL ONLY CONSIDER LOW DOSE IF RA1 123 NO 100MCI. Not going to ruin my saliva glands. I could be in the 5% that has permanent damage.

IS THIS DOCTOR OKAY.
2)I went to a highly recommended surgeon(not a ENT)DR Thomas Fahey who is Chief of endrochine surgery at NY Cornel College and surgeon at ny presberitian hospital. He does this thyroid surgery every day and will make a 1.5 inch incesion no drain and disolving internal stiches. He said he will make smallest incesion possible in crease of neck not to see scar. He is taking 1/2 loeb out.

" I don't know your surgeon, but he sounds like he knows what he is doing. If you are really uneasy about it you can always try to ask a second doc for additional feedback.

I know this is a scary time for you. Hang in there, there's alot of people on here that will help support you through this.

All my prayers for your return to speedy good health. "

" As I understand it, RAI is for WDTC not hurthle cell. If they are unable to get all the cancer out they may use radiation beam or chemo but hurthle cells do not absorb Iodine so rai is not used. "

" I had half of my thyroid removed to begin with. After the results came back from the biopsy it showed cancer then I had the other half removed. The surgery is pretty easy so for me it was better to try and save half then to assume the worse and have it all removed. I was lucky and didn't have to have any radiation but the doctors still monitor me. "
