I hear from high dose rai 131 you get permanent damage to saliva glands causing them to die,and causing dry mouth, poor saliva production, eating and swallowing problems, teeth damage, sleeping, painful salifa glands swelling loose taste, and tear duct damage.
1)Do you have any kind of permanent damage to your salivia glands with above issues and has this reduced quality off life from rai131. 2)do you need rai 131 with minimally invasive hurthle cell cancer. Can I wait a few months, have reflus with swallowing problems already. 3 DO I HAVE CANCER- male 59 yrs old with single 1.5cm hurthle cell neoplasm found by fnb 9/17/09. Endo said I need surgery to remove 1/2 loeb to determine if it cancer or benign. Sseeing surgeon 10/21/09 going vac 10/24-11/2, and 1st week nov get 2nd opinions. will do surgery in nov or early ded. Hopw wait is not too long. Posted on 10/15/09, 12:10 am |

I personally have had no side effects from RAI and I had it 6 months ago. I sucked on sour lemon drops after the treatment for a few days. Like anything else you will hear both pro and con about RAI and about Lemon Drops after it.
Many people here had it (RIA) and some refuse it. Read, learn. listen, TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR and do what you feel is best after all that. If you haven't yet go to www.THYCA.org. Thats one place to research RAI.

The key to not damaging your salivary glands is to flush them out asap after receiving RAI, not avoiding RAI itself (if recommended). So it's no joke, your doctor will advise you to suck on lemon drops or other super sour candy for the first 24-48 hours after RAI. By the time you have your body scan, if you've followed those directions, you salivary glands will be fairly clear and not damaged at all. It's the same principle for all the showers you take right after RAI....your skin and sweat glands don't need the RAI, so flushing them out, sweating them out, etc., will help keep the targeted RAI where it needs to be....hitting stray and harmful thyroid cells.

I had a swollen salivary glad about a week after RAI, lasted a few days only. No problems since. Now, I have very itchy tear ducts. Not sure if it's an RAI thing, or allergies.??? My RAI was 8-31-09.
What kind of dental problems can happen? I see it mentioned in certain articles, but no specifics. I need to schedule a dental appt. soon and would like to know what to let them know to look for.

I had RAI last November. Since then I've experienced most of what you described....dry mouth, loss of taste, salivary gland obstruction with pain and swelling, very dry eyes. Plus I've experienced loss of sense of smell. It's been a year now and none of the symptoms have improved. It's very frustrating as I didn't realize all of the possible side-effects. I'm hoping some of these resolve eventually, but am not optimistic. Has anyone else had this type of experience? How did you cope with the symptoms?
