Anyones doctor ever mention any foods to stay away from when taking thyroid meds(ie foods that interfere with absorption) My med handouts mention a few but the doctor never has.

My doctor just said not to take it at the same time as calcium. You are supposed to take them on an empty stomach and not eat for like a half hour after.

Here's a case were I know my doctors are not Gods. I learned, I think on this site (and then verified) about the 1/2 hour rule. When I said something about it to the ENT Doctor who did the surgery he said he didn't know that.

jcv,
thanks. yeah, I was aware of the "nothing 4 hours before, nothing one hour after." Been doing that regularly since this all started. But my med sheet for Levothyroxine indicates steering clear of walnuts, soybean flour and fiber. Listing "Fiber" seems a pretty broad term for me, especially some fiber, like brocholli has been linked in helping to reduce the risk of some cancers. So it has been a regular staple in my diet as has been soy sauce. I am just trying to figure out why my meds are not controlling my levels well. I doubt it's a dietary thing but I am trying to leave no stone unturned. The docs have no clue and no apparent plan, so I am forced back in the role of self doctoring (which I loathe). So if any of you have information on the subject, let me know.

Hey MW,
This is a list that might be helpful to you. The foods that can interfere with thyroid function are called goitrogens. I still eat some of these items in moderation, but I got to the point that every time I ate broccoli I got bad indigestion, so I decided that my body was trying to tell me to stop eating it. Examples of foods that contain goitrogens Cruciferous vegetables including: * Broccoli * Brussel sprouts * Cabbage * Cauliflower * Kale * Kohlrabi * Mustard * Rutabaga * Turnips Millet Peaches Peanuts Radishes Soybean and soy products, including tofu Spinach Strawberries

wow bulldogt,
Half that list makes it on to my table at one point or another. I noticed you said those foods interfere with "thyroid function." Since I don't have a thyroid anymore, do these foods also interfere with the thyroid (meds?)

The article actually said that it inteferes with thyroid hormone production. I always thought it had to do with absorption. You might want to ask your doctor or do some reading online about it. I may be mistaken. I just know broccoli bothers me.

Goitern products are not important once you have no Thyroid but before hand yes it helps to stay away from those products but again one you have your Thyroid taken out it doesn't mean anything.

let me also say that timing of calcium does matter so does almost all vitamens the think tank is don't take anything for four hours after the Thyroid pill primarily the vitamens. It has to do with the absorbtion and conteraction of your medication. If, it were me I would after the Thyroid being taken a few hours later eat radish all those products that you are told not to eat speed up your metabilism and that is the reason they don't want you to eat them because take synthroid would go into your system and then right out. So, if you wait an hour are two your body got it and at that point Radishs and stuff only work to enhanse your abily to metablilize your food.

I take my synthroid when I first wake up. Then a hour later I'll eat something for breakfast. Then around noon I take my calcium. I had my thyroidectomy in October of 2007. I'm actually still trying to get my levels adjusted. I'm at 112 Synthroid right now and my TSH is 0.31 and my T4 free is 1.7 and I'm feeling pretty good. I get my levels checked again in March. My Dr. likes to keep the TSH low because it helps keep away cancer. I lost one of my vocal cords but the one has taken over pretty good. My arthritis has become really bad after all this, anyone else have problems worsen since thryoid problems. My feet are really bad. I'm actually disabled with arthritic problems now. Well enough of me, how is everyone else doing? Hope ok.
