Discussion:
Breast Cancer to possible Thyroid Cancer

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May. Went thru 6 rounds of Chemo treatments. I started week 4 of radiation today. Week and a half ago I had a fine needle aspiration of my thyroid. My doctor called today and said it looks like thyroid cancer and she's referring me to a thyroid specialist. Right now I am really trying to wrap my brain around this. I think I'll be OK but this is hard to take.

" I'm not sure if there is a specific link b/w thyroid and breast cancer, but it does seem to me that if you have one type of cancer, you are more prone to others. Unfortunately. I really empathize with you because I was diagnosed with early melanoma and then 10 months later, thyroid cancer. It is extremely difficult to deal with 2 diagnoses in a year. I guess I look at it positively and at least I could deal with the emotional "trauma' of both the cancers at the same time. Anyhow, I can assure you that thyroid cancer treatment will not be as bad as what you have gone through for breast cancer. I think others would agree with me!!! Hugs to you! "

" I was diagnosed with BC in 1/2005, and then 3 months later while at the first visit with my oncologist, he pointed at my neck, then said, "We'll deal with that later". Then in July after finishing my chemo, I had the biopsy, and it was cancer. I was freaking out, wondering what else in my body had cancer. I'm happy to report, after going through surgery and having my thyroid removed, then having the radiation pill, here I am almost 7yrs later, and have had no recurrences of either type! I have had just about every part of me scanned, probed....PET scans, MRIs, CATs, ultrasounds, colonoscopies, etc., and nothing. So please know you can get through this. I actually looked at a picture of me in 1999 and noticed a bump on my neck, so that cancer had been there much longer than the BC. The cancers do not really have a link, other than you might have been exposed to something in your earlier years. It was very hard for me to take , and we seem to have had the same kind of experience--2 in the same year!!! Hang tight, be strong, and just know deep down inside that you will get through this. You can and you will!!! :) "

" Timing can really rock your world some days! I am having a reoccurrence and still have to deal with all those fun gyn tests plus Ovarian Cancer tests due to my Mother. Each time I take those tests I pray nothing is found. Cancer runs in my family. So grateful I don't have a prostate too!

I do agree on the treatments you are dealing with BC and later thyroid, you are one strong lady.

Hang in there and take care of yourself! We women are strong. "
