Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Mine was alright. I've got a
question. Has anyone ever taken Prednisone for a long time (6 months) and had any nerve damage from it? I might have nerve damage in both hands from the effects of Prednisone, but I'll be seeing a neurologist on Dec 11th. Both hands goes numb like they are going asleep and a pain that wakes me up. All of this happens when Im in bed, but it's starting to get worse by each day. Like yesterday I was driving and my hands were starting to go numb and like right now also they are tingling. I was just checking to see if anyone of you are experiencing the same thing. HP to all. Michelle Posted on 11/28/08, 10:11 am |

This sounds like carpal tunnel to me. I have these same feelings in my hands and I have been told that I have it. It only happens to me mostly at night when I am sleeping and it helps if I hang my hands off of the bed.
Let me know what the Doctor tells you about this please. Kristi

Prednisone is a type of steriod. I don't know if they use it with ITP, but my dr used it with me and for what reason I have no clue.

Ohhhh...the devil's drug for sure! Almost as bad as the pheresis. I took the massive doses all three episodes but not longer than a couple of months.
The TTP itself could cause the issues you are having. I have the same thing in my feet, hands, legs and it's either from the raynauds syndrome or the cryoglobulemia or it could be damage from the steriod or ttp. I would at least get it check out by a neurologist.or ask your hemo.

I will be seeing a neurologist next Thursday (12/11). I told my hema about it today and he said it could be carpal tunnel and that's also what my family dr had said on the 18th. I haven't had plamspheresis since February, but ended the prednisone June 27th.

to TTPgirls first post-
NO I haven't been on that one.. Is the nerves the same as your nervous system? I read that TTP messes with your nervous system.. in the next day or so I'll get some facts to back that up along with the link to the site I got it from. thanks Dev

Yes, TTP I have been told can mess with your neurological system. I have nerve issues, I struggled for over 7 months with it. My ankle area and my arms at times, my fingers other times go through the numbing. Prednisone I know just made me sick, I don't know about its correlation with neurological issues.

Well I found out last Thursday, which I forgot to post, but I have mild to moderate case of Carpal Tunnel. No surgery is scheduled but if it gets worse, I am to let the neurologist know.
Seabee17, did the Prednisone cause your nerve damage and issues with that? Im going to have to ask my family dr if that could have caused my carpal tunnel or how it could have occurred with my situation. Michelle

Honestly I don't know if its the reason for nerve damage. I went through so much when I was sick with it and my body was being torn apart inside so badly I couldn't say for sure, but I do have sensation issues in my hands, my ankles, sometimes my arms. It could be from something else, I was on so many medications, but I have issues in those areas still that started back then.

You might want to either talk with your family dr or your hema, but both of my drs (family and hema) said the same thing that it sounds like carpal tunnel. They would probably do what is called an EMG which does a test on your nerves. It don't hurt but it takes about 20 mins to do. Hope everything goes well with ya hun. Happy New Year.
