I already posted this on the end of another thread before i realised i could start my own so sorry if you've already read it.

My husband had a blood test yesterday after going to the doctors with a rash on his legs and was told to go straight to a&e where he was admitted to hospital with a platelet count of 1.

We have since been told that he has ITP and they want to do a bone marrow biopsy. His red and white cell counts are fine. We have never heard of this condition and so far the doctors seem not to be worried. That said, they are keeping him in for at least a week on steroid treatment to monitor his platelet levels.

I can't help thinking they are playing the situation down a little.

What impact will this condition have on his, and our families, life?

Thanks for any help.

" Ok ITP can be a concern and a very low platlet count is a worry but as long as they are aware and you are aware then all should be fine.
Its all down understanding. i always suggest to get a note book and write question and symptoms that worry you. then write the answers down. if you dont understand ask. because all patients are differant even if they have the same illness.
the steriods should improve the platlet count. the thing is the illness is not a killer on its own. it as affect on other things like operations. there are people who live with lower levels of plalets and higher levels like blood pressure there is a normal range for age and sex. however a rough rough guide you need a cound over 130 to ble classed as normal ...I live with a count of about 50 -100 with drops down to about 19 but as long as it jumps back up finger crossed no platlet transfussion for me.
so my advice is try to relax ( i know this is hard) ask questions (which you are doing ) but ask your doctors they are there to help.
ask for a copy of blood results and other info and then talk to your GP for a more basic explaination sometime consultants use big word.

Love and Best wishes
Tiggy "
