Pain Medicine - Doctors fearing prescribing.

When I was originaly released from the hospital, I was sent home with a prescription of Percocet. Normally, such a strong drug would work wonders for my pain. (I had shoulder procedures before). This time, due to my TOS, the percocet did nothing except make me nauseus. My family physician saw me and prescribed Dilaudid. She said the prescription should last me 30 days. I was grateful as when I got home that medicine did work, did not make me nauseus, nor "loopy" for lack of a better term. However, I had to take exactly double th eperscribed dosage, and therefore have ran out of pain medicine. Some days I need none, some days are horrid, the pain is actually worse than any Migraine headache I have ever had.
My problem, how do I explain to my doctor that I need pain medicine without feeling like a drug junkie? I am scheduled for rib resectioning next week, but until then am I just to suffer? I understand the pain medicine Dilaudid is strong medicine, but Thank God, My TOS and the complications I have suffered are unusual and severe. I feel alone, Im in pain, and I just want to be out of pain. What should I do? I dont want to be turned into a doctor shopper, Ive never had any sort of drug dependancy, and have lived a very healthy, active, drug and alcohol free life. Please help. Any advice would really be appreciated. Posted on 09/10/09, 01:09 pm |

By the way, my family physician just told me via her nurse on the phone that she will not prescribe me any additional pain medicine for 2 weeks. Ill be in and out of surgery by then.
