Solipsism

I am a devout Catholic, and I don't want to believe in Solipsism, but I'm just finding it so mind-blowing that I'm nervous about it. Ever since I entered college, my anxiety problems have been magnified greatly.
Solipsism is the belief that the only thing that can be proven true is the mind. Otherwise, it is impossible to prove. This means it's possible that everything in my mind is an illusion, and I don't want to believe such, but it can't be disproven, so I am in misery. Thoughts of my own mortality, my faith, the meaning of life, and now this have consumed me. College should be fun, but I'm just miserable! I would ask that someone show me they're not alone, but solipsism says I'm the only one that exists. It's like living in Hell. Posted on 10/02/09, 12:10 am |

Be thankful for the great grace you have received in being a Catholic. Frequent the sacraments (confession and communion) often and if possible attend a traditional parish such as an SSPX chapel. This is because the modern church no longer holds to Catholic doctrine.
Pray daily for an increase in faith, hope and charity. Through faith you know that you are not the only one that exists as God also exists and he created you out of nothing. Happiness comes from having a purpose. Your purpose is to save your soul from hell and then to be happy with God for all eternity. You are to make use of all creatures for that purpose only in so far as they serve that purpose. A creature is anything that has been created, that is, everything and everyone besides God. Develop a strong love for God and the Blessed Virgin Mary by praying the rosary everyday while meditating on the mysteries. Once you love God who created you and loves you infinitely, you will love your neighbor as yourself because they are creatures of your beloved God, the Blessed Trinity and he wants you to love them in this way. I also recommend reading "True Devotion To Mary" by Louis de Montfort as well as a good traditional catechism. Hold on to the faith and the traditional teachings of the Church (pre-vatican II) and recognize them as the highest truths available to you as they have been revealed to you by God who can not tell a lie. This will be your compass to keep you sane in this life and happy in the next.

Do you need proof? How does one who believes in Solipsism understand matter? Doctors can create a baby by taking the sperm and egg and put it together but can the create the human egg from scratch? Can you create dust? Only a fool would not believe that something greater then ourselves is at hand here. When you simply look at the marvels of the physical natural world you know in your heart that their is something... And that blows Solipsism out of the water. Rest easy. You don't have to have all the answers. Just enjoy the ride.
