Over the counter mouthguard?

Hi everyone,

I have muscular tmj and was in alot of pain a year ago. I had a customized mouthguard made from a wonderful oral surgeon but wore it all of one day because I got pregnant and it made me vomit.
Due to being SO sick and laying on the couch for three months (no stress, barely eating, talking, smiling, etc.) my tmj miracously improved. Now... the pain has returned and much to my dismay, I cannot find my mouthguard anywhere!!!!! We did a lot of cleaning before the baby and i'm guessing it must have ended up in the garbage though I don't know how:(
Anyway, i've always heard that mouthguards you buy over the counter or online were risky and could possible make tmj worse. I need something, but can't afford another one from the dentist. Does anyone have any recommendations or thoughts? Would it be safer for me since I have musclar tmj as opposed to joint related tmj? I'm so miserable...
Thanks so much

" The only way to tell if you have joint related TMJ is to have both an MRI and a CT scan............otherwise it's just a guess that you only have muscular TMJ.

As for the bite guards that are sold over the counter, I would definintly try one, but just be ultra aware of any changes to your bite(they can cause bite changes) and be aware of your pain levels, ect... I've met people who've been helped by them, but just be cautious. "

" Thanks, floridakris
I have had an MRI through my oral surgeon which confirmed
muscular tmj. Also, I thankfully have NO bite problems, scary to think a mouthguard could change that. "
