okay, again, this might be TMI...but does anybody have incontinence from their stroke? i only ask because i have been going #1 sometimes...but it's mostly because my husband makes me laugh...so it's not like i am just standing/sitting and cannot control my bladder, or hold it until i get to a restroom...it's more like....i'm doing nothing in particular, and he makes a joke, or does something stupid, and...whooosh...i lose it...
i get so mad at him when he does that...especially when he does stuff that he KNOWS will set me off... i just wasn't sure if this was a result of the stroke, or me not doing my kegel exercises when i was pregnant...cuz i did this a couple of times before my stroke...but it just seems more often since my stroke... thanks again in advance... eileen Posted on 03/20/09, 04:03 am |

Eileen,
I don't really have incontinence but def don't have as much control. When I have to go I start looking for a b.r. try not to hold it. If I get ancious/nervous it is even worse. As far as I'm concerned ther isn't an issue of tmi. We've all been there. I'll talk about anything! Hope you're having a great day! Barb

oh, barb - you're so right!; there's nothing TMIabout these issues, Eileen- don't worry. I don't suffer from in continence either, but there have been times when I've "lost it" so to speak; like you mentioned yourself when you laugh so hard, it just comes out but, I was like that even before my stroke - it's just worse now, so, like barb mentioned, when i feel like i have to go, I look for a restroom right away, just to make sure. . . You can also try wearing those Depends underwear, if worse comes to worst. Good luckwith this! I guess what I'm trying to say is that you're not alone, ok? It may seem that way, but, you're not, sweetie! if nothing else, barb and i are here with you.

I had my stroke 4 years ago and for the first month I had incontinence. I wore adult diapers then after a month I went back to my old underwear. Then after I had my baby it came back once then it went away, I was peeing and didn't even know it. I was wearing one of those industrial pads so I didn't make a mess

Eileen-
Incontinence is normal after a stroke. My father is almost 3 months post stroke and is still incontinent. The brain just may not have picked back up yet in that aspect! Everything after a stroke takes time. :) ~Kayla

hi im new to this site so not sure if im answering right i had my first stroke in october theen a series of tias and another stroke in may, I am undergoing treatment for incontenence, which is exactly as you describe it , i either cannot stop it or the urge is so bad ihave to get to the toilet really quickly. I had the usual stress thing after having three children but nothing like this my consultant has explained to me that it is a mixture of the brain signals being interupted due to the stroke and the muscles to the bladder going into spasm again due to the stroke, i am on medication for the brain part which has help slightly, and after a series of test he has a ssured me that he will inject the bladder with btox which will stop the problem, So yes it is probably caused by your stroke and you dont need to suffer go and see you gp and ask to see the urologist to see if they can help you. let me know how you get on and hey we can both join the rich and famous and have botox albeit not in the same place as them but they dont need to know that do they ha ha ha

I'm almost 10 years post-stroke. And yes, I have bladder incontinence still. I've done the exercises they recommended to no avail. I've learned to gauge when I might need to go and start making my way to the bathroom early.
