Pain?

i was surprised to find that in response to one of my posts, pain was mentioned as a primary component or expectation of neuro rehab. are there a lot of people experiencing pain as a result of stroke? if so, what have you been told about it? from my experience in working with stroke survivors, rehab should NOT be painful! dont get me wrong... its A LOT of work (and thats putting it mildly)... but if you are experiencing pain, the therapy team and your doctor should be working together to find out what is causing it, address it, and manage it appropriately (keeping you as pain free as possible)! if they arent able to keep it under control, ask for a referral to a pain management specialist! hope this helps (and i hope not too many people are having to deal with pain day after day!)

" I was given rehab so I don't know if pain is associated with it. They gave me a year to live and no support or therapy. I had extreme painin the area of stroke, from filling defects, av malformations, and more spontanious clots.

In addition, I was experiencing white matter volume loss on the right and demylination of the sheathing of my spine at the top of my neck. So the pain could become overwhelming.

More recently, I experience pain form atrophy to my right carotid artery where there isa progressive dissection.

I take three injections of heparin daily. Sometimes it is a double-edged sword. Good clots form to heal the dissecting area, then the heparin works to block the platelet action. And I have a rare platelet disfunction.

I assume all of these things cause pain and I can't imagine that physical therapy would be pain free. I work through the pain in repetative exercises when I think it will help.

I don't recommend pain medicine. Those of us who have experienced strokes (and I had 30-40 seizures daily) should be cautious about all medications, especially pain medication. Numbing the pain leaves us defenseless and we can no longer recognize symptoms that we need to be aware of.

I hope this is useful.

" I meant that I did not receive rehab. They just told me to go home and prepare my family for the worst. "

" I had an Ischemic stroke March 1st, 09. I started feeling pain about 2 mos. Post stoke. It gets worse everyday. I'm on Tramadol & Darvocet and Naproxen. Thats a joke of pain meds! I have had phys. theraphy & ofcourse it hurt, because I was in pain in the 1st place. I did learn some stretching exercises that helped w/back pain, but everyday, all day, I feel like I have NO lubrication in my cartilage. Out of bed in the morning, I literally cannot walk my ankles hurt so bad.
Just for me, YES, phys. therapy hurts, cause I hurt already. Bending & stretching joints that already hurt. Maybe, after awhile the excersies will help relax the tenseness, right now I continue to livew/the pain. Sorry no good news from me......Billie "
