Does anyone have personal knowledge of the use of it and if so is the device a stimulus for short term use or it it ongoing? Does it promote nerve damage by stimulus ? I'd appreciate your input. Its an awful lot of $$$ without knowing how well it works, if it works, etc...Thanks!

" I checked into this quite a bit. it is on going, And you have to be a candidate to use it! Also, insurance does NOT cover this. Your looking about $3,000.00 out of your own pocket!I'm sticking to my AFO for now.I do force myself to walk without anything, just to strengthen my ankle! Good luck! "

" I am an orthotist with Hanger Prosthetics and orthotics. I have been trained to dispense the WalkAide. It functions by stimulating the nerve on the side of your leg as you swing your leg. It is adjusted to turn on and off as you walk. Go to www.walkaide.com for more info or write back to me. As Indimae said you need to be evaluated to determine if it will work for you. I ahve seen some widely varied reactions from my patients. Evaluations are usually free so why not give it a try? You may be able to find funding sources for it. Ins. does not cover it as of now. Hanger is working on Medicare ot get them to pay for it. We feel it will be awhile before this happens.
Good Luck Gleng "

" I got my WalkAide last Feb/09, it helped me a lot, but I knew that it would after trying in the clinic on 2 separate occasions. I had an AFO for almost 4 years, which caused my leg to atrophy. I used the WalkAide every day for about 3 months, when my skin under the pads got super sensitive and I stopped use to allow my leg to heal. I soon found that my gait was almost as good without the aid as with. I joined the SilverSneakers program at the gym and this has helped alot. I use a cane to walk and am improving. "
