MY sister suffered a stroke two years ago and has lost her sense of balance. She suffers from vertigo which she explains as seeing people going up and down as though she was on board a ship. Any ideas on how to effect a cure would be very gratefully received.

" Vertigo can have many causes such as an inner ear problem or she may be suffering from a condition called Miniers Disease not too sure on the spelling there. if it is a simple case of an inner ear disturbance the Dr's would treat it with Antivert. but meniers disease is more complex.
Check with her doctor.

" www.wicab.com, The "brainport" balance device. I too suffer from imbalance caused by by my stroke in Oct, 2006. Although the "brainport" still has to be ok'd by the FDA here in the US, Canada & Europe already has been using this device with great success. I also recommend getting the paperback book titled "The brain that changes itself" by Norman Doidge, M.D. I am strokesantafe@yahoo.com and also the same here on DS. I would very much like to continue a dialog on this subject. Anyone else is also welcome. "

" It must be stroke-related because I, too, deal with the same issue; heck, even while laying in bed, I sometimes jerk up/away coz I feel like I'm falling, lol It's very annoying! I 'll have to ask my doctor about it next time I see him. It can also be very scary at times, especially when I'm just laying there, resting - I don't get it at all. . .I'll be coming back to this topic discussion often now, to get some insight into this vertigo issue.Casey, you seem to be very knowledgable about this. . . thanks for your insight! " My vertigo is about 2/3 under control thanks to an over the counter supplement called Lipo-Flavonoid Plus. For me, this is a miracle in a bottle. It's a tablet and you're supposed to take 3 per day. That would make a bottle last about 30 days. Since I'm so poor, I only take 2 per day. One at night and one mid morning. It took about 3 weeks for me to get the full effect. The bad thing about my having vertigo is that I am prone to motion sickness so everytime I turned my head a certain way I'd get dizzy and then nauseous and then I'd vomit. One night I threw up for 6 hours! These pills are about $30 per bottle here, but I think they're cheaper by about $5 online, but then you have to pay postage and handling. I'm NOT an employee of the company that makes these and I get no compensation for recommending them (even though I SHOULD! - LOL). I am simply and honestly just one person whose life was improved by discovering an OTC supplement that TRULY works for me. I think it would be fabulous if they worked for someone else. "

" In April of this year I had a stroke in the cerebellem. One of the symptions was vertigo. The doctors have given me meclizine to help with the dizziness and zofran for the vomiting. I still have to take the meclizine. I also have been going to physical therapy to help with retraining my brain about balance. When I first began I had to walk with a walker, not because I couldn't walk but because I would fall over because I didn't have my balance back. Now I walk with a cane. The PT gave me exercises to do that threw my balance off, but the more I do them the better I get. Hope this helps.
