August 30th following brain surgery.
She was in a coma for maybe 9 days after and now is in a state of who knows. The neurologist says she is not in a coma anymore but she wont wake up. However she follows verbal commands pretty well, such as squeeze my hand, stick out your tongue and wiggle your toes. She even did a one time two finger wave to my husband on her own when I told her he was there and to say hi. The doctors are not sure what is going on. The EEG shows slow left side (surgery was on left) and normal on the right. The stroke started in the Basil Ganglia area and continued to the brain stem. Any ideas? Posted on 09/21/09, 09:09 pm |

hi, i feel for you. my mom had a stroke on july 4th of last year. it was on her left side also, which paralysed her right side and affected her speech. she knows what she wants to say but can't usually get the right words out. my advice to you would be to get her into a good stroke rehab ASAP. the one my mom went to (at holzer hospital in Gallipolis, ohio)was great! don't let anyone tell you that she needs to go to a nursing home first. there are graduated programs that will work with her and i bet you'll be amazed at what she's capable of!
when mom had her stroke i felt totally lost. i didn't know the first thing about what to do or expect. the way her neourologist talked, she wasn't gonna get much better. i felt hopeless and helpless. knowing my mom i should have known that she had the strength and willpower to fight back. i couldn't have imagined how far she could come in just a month at the rehab. this was after minimum care at the nursing home for a month. read everything you can get your hands on! i was too spaced out to pick the stuff up and comprehend anything at the time. just don't give up on her or underestimate her. everyone is going to be a special case of their own , BUT, THERE IS MUCH MORE HOPE THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE RIGHT NOW!! don't let her see you cry if you can help it but don't be afraid to cry "with" her, DON'T let her see that you pity her, DO let her know that you believe in her and that she's still the mom that you've always loved. i wish you and your family lots of luck. by the way, don't think you have to do everything by yourself. believe me, i've been trying for over a year and it can consume you if you let it.get help whenever you can!

Hi Thanks
I'm sorry to hear about your Mom. My mom lives in a apartment in our house. She is able to get around and care for herself. She's lucky. She was so active before the stroke. Now she cant drive and is in a wheel chair a lot. She can walk ok... but with a quad cane. I think because she is a bit younger and it caused her to have to change her lifestyle so fast it makes her so sad. Also she isnt very patient!!!!
