Friends,
I'm hoping to get an interview for a teaching job soon. How, when, or do I bring up my disability status. It will be obvious that there is something wrong when I walk in and out and my arm gets spastic talking about different things(at least I think it would be obvious), but most people don't really notice too much. So, do I say anything? I don't want to appear to hide this and think that I will be a benefit to the students in light of my disability. Any advice??? Thanks, Barb Posted on 04/01/09, 08:04 am |

'know what, Barb? If you can't control the spasms, then, you really don't have much choice. If you think it's pretty obvious, I wouldn't mention your disability. HUnless you really think and believe that it will deter you from doing your job. I really don't see how that can be. . . you seem like a very nice and intelligent person' I wouldn't worry about it too much. Be positive, lady! so what if you spazz a little, lol. sorry! I'm just trying to make you smile a little. Good luck and take care!

In addition - I was once told by a very reliable source to never bring up your disability unless they specifically as you about it; most people won't coz that is the ultimate in rudeness! Anyway, just be yourself and stop worrying coz you're just stressing yourself out and you know what happens when you're stressed, right? Take care and good luck! I'll keep you in my prayers, sweetie!

Barb, Unless one of the requirements of the job is something you can't do I would see no reason to mention it. Will you be required to lift 20 lb packages and put them on a shelf over your head?
Good luck, Dean

I have had friends say "you aught to disclose you have had a stroke." Then they will understand why you do this or that. I look and talk fine and until you start being around me long enough is when someone can identify my issues. Otherwise, initially, I hide things pretty well.
If you are slow to figure things out or have other cognitive disabilities I would say yes, then disclose them, it will give people insight on being more understanding instead of judging you for what you don't know. If it's your arm and you have no control over it, all you would have to say is that it's a medical condition and it has nothing to do with how I interact with you as a class.

Thanks everyone. Most of my students and people I work around don't even notice. I just don't want interviewers to think that I am trying to hide something. I guess I'll just see how it goes "if" I get an interview. God and I know what my abilities are and he will put me where I can best do his work. It is great to have people who REALLY understand my position to help with these questions.
God Bless! Barb
