Hi, I'm new to the group, but been with DS for over a year. I've probably should have been with this group much earlier.
The problem is that I'm a "what if-er" Under any scenario I attempt to contemplate what may or may not happen. This may be ok to a limited degree, but I sometimes get consummed or obsessed over reoccurring thoughts. I know that life is short and reoccurring thoughts of something that may or may not happen is a waste. I attempt to distract myself by doing things that I enjoy. For me that is cycling, physical work- outs, walking, gardening etc, But I still take too much time with this stressful obsession. ie. What if my job is in jeopardy, or can't make a payment or I must finish an entire task as quickly as possible; unfortunately this can get endless. I would like to get over this and begin to relax and have more confidence things will just work out. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Posted on 06/30/09, 02:06 am |

Hi I am kind of new too. I am no doctor but it sounds like you may have some sort of OCD. I have a daughter wgi suffers from that. She has intrusive thoughts. They got so bad she couldn't distract her mind from thinking and thinking we ended up going to a psychiatrist. Of course the doc put her on a medication. At first it worked fine. Lately the medication hasn't been working as well. Lots of new stress in her life. Anyway, My point is that you are doing the right thing with the distractions. If it gets too bad where it stops you from living your life you may want to seek a psychiatrist or psychologist, Does it seem to get worse with stress? With the economy so bad these days, It is hard not to worry about things like job security and money. I hope you feel better, good luck.

Hello:
what is wrong with this moment you are in right now.... until you start thinking about it. In the moment of NOW i am ok. One day I had a great job, the next I was out of work for 9 months! yuk. each day and several times I would just look at what is in front of me and say in this moment of "now" I am ok. And I was, i had a roof, food and clothing. It got that basic. Thoughts are like the wind, they come and go, enjoy them, see them pass and know that not every breeze storms into the wind to take your sail boat off course. enjoy your thoughts, the "what if" thoughts may be there just to show your what you have. Its a dance of the mind, dont fight it...go with it. :)

I think you're doing the right thing by distracting yourself.
Have you also tried challenging your thoughts? Ask yourself what evidence there is that your job is in jeopardy or what evidence there is that you will not be able to make your payments, etc. Also, try to think of the evidence that your job is safe or that you'll successfully make your payments -- e.g. the fact that you've successfully met all payments in the past (I don't know if this is the case, but just an example!) or the fact that you have received praise at work (again, don't know if this is the case, but hope this illustrates my point).
