I am new here and I'm looking for some advice on what I might be able to do to relieve physical and mental stress. I usually work out and if I dont continue on a daily basis, it seems that my aches and pains come back more. I have TMJ disorder and stress does play a big factor in this. Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

" I know it's probably a tired suggestion, but deep breathing exercises really help me a lot.

Make sure that it's quiet and peaceful where you're at then lay down on a couch or your bed on your back. Try to relax your muscles, as they may be tense. Close your eyes, inhale for ten seconds, hold it, then exhale for ten seconds.

Repeat until you feel calmer.

Hope this helps! "

" When my body tense up from stress I'd listen to music (especially music from when I was a kid/teenager or play a game on the computer). My mom has jaw problems, she was told that most of her jaw problem come from stress because she clinch her jaw (she is not aware of it). She was told to use hot bottle (she warms water in a cup in the microwave and then pour it into a bottle). She is told to hold it on her jaw, she takes medication to relax her jaw or she'll take a warm bath and relax by watching something funny. Did you see a doctor or dentist for this problem? my mom was told that she'll need splints in her mouth, the splints will stablize her jaw so it would not lock on her. Good Luck Hon, I'm sorry that you have to go through this. "

" I make sure to have quiet "me time" every night. I take a long, relaxing, candle lit bath. I used to shower all the time, but the baths really allow me to be still and have time for myself. Twice a week I add epsom salt to the water, which removes all the toxins and helps with aches. Meditation also helps tremendously. "

" I too used to use exercise to relieve stress but as I have no time, can't get back to that. I take a shower with good smelling soap and then lay in bed and read. At least when I read my mind can't think of anything else. Not as good as exercise.

Recently I've been doing some Qi Gong (like Tia Chi but easier) on dvd (I love Lee Holden dvds) which includes deep breathing and some meditation. This is nice exercise that also relaxes me physically and mentally. "
