" His best bet would be to see a dr and get a good professional assessment. If he has a problem with his knees, he may need to have surgery, and for his back, he may need to see a chiro to see what may be out of place.

Quite often, people have career related pain issues, and seeing a physio person would be a good idea to get some work related exercises that will go a long way to help.
People who do desk work need to stretch to keep their back straight and their shoulders not rounded.
Even some forms of exercise can cause issues that can be eliminated by stretches and other exercises. When you do alot of spinning or bike riding, you can develop very tight hip flexors, so good stretches are needed to loosen them up.
Chiro / physio can give you some exercises to balance out any work related pains he is having. "
