Hi, my name is Ken. I played sports all my life. 4 years of football 3 of them were varsity , 7 months of boxing, and a year of wrestling. I've also competed in school with weight lifting. Freshmen year I benched 285 pounds weighing in at 215. Sophomore year I benched 325 pounds weighing in at 250. I exercised 3-6 hours a day, could run 8 miles straight.
Senior year I hurt my back back at the gym running in spring. I didn't have health insurance at the time , so I didn't know what to do. So I tried my best to be normal. The following Winter I got my health insurance back. I found out I had a herniated disc in my lower back. They gave me exercises to do, so I did them for a few month. Everything got worse. I started losing control in my foot, and had crippling pain in my back going down to my foot. I just went back to the doctors and found out I have drop foot, and may need surgery. My physical therapist said I would not be able to play a sport again.
Its put everything in my life on hold. I can barley walk, had to quite my job. I was going to start college this fall, but sitting up to long makes my legs go numb.
Has anyone gone through stuff like this? How do I make it through this.

" I do not like elective surgery. There are very few conditions which require surgery after trauma to the musculoskeletal system. In most cases if you treat the trauma right under conservative stimulation the area will heal.Having the foot drop is a serious functional condition.Your nerve is undergoing substantial compressive forces. This is one condition when surgery to decompress the nerve is warranted. If you do not take pressure of the nerve. The nerve will be damaged. The impulse will not get through and you may lose conduction from that nerve to the muscle for a long time.Re-evaluate the way you work out.You are working out to aggressively. If no one is demanding you to maintain a certain level of fitness. Then you do not need to work out that hard. The body can not tolerate that level of load. The joints are very fragile. Why do you think they pay millions of dollars to professional athletes? No pay no play.Conserve your joints. They are the only ones you have. " Thanks for the advice. I will probably need an operation for my back. When I walk its like walking in fire, plus when leaning froward I lose my circulation from my knees down from both legs. "

" Hey I totally know what your going through although my situation probably isn't that bad. My name is Victoria and I am currently a college student majoring in Rehab Services. As of now I am enrolled in a class called Medical Aspects and part of the class the teacher requires that we speak to someone who has a disability. Since I myself have a spinal cord injury such as two herniated discs, I read your story and wanted to know more. So I was wondering if you would like to be part of this semester long project, I would greatly appreciate it. If you could give me your e-mail as soon as possible, as this will be our way of communicating. Thanks so much for your time and if you could please let me know as soon as possible, thanks again. "

" Hey I have gone through very similar. I was a soccer player and played on a co-ed traveling team and was top-ranked in IN. I fell on the field and I just walked it off, I played for yrs. and that is what u do. The next week I was at school and one of my friends pushed me, and I fell over a desk and I got up right away and my foot felt werid. I did not worry about it the rest of the day. The next day my foot was black went to dr. he put me in a walking boot and wanted MRI because it was not moving right. I got the MRI and the dr. called me and told me I had to get in his office soon and stop walking on my foot. I had 3 broken bones, 2 stress factures, torn muscles and over stretched my tendons and chipped the bone in my joint. I waited to see if it would heal it self and it didn't. I had 2 hr. long surgery, though that point it was done and over w . It wasn't the dr. rushed the surgery and trapted the nerve in the inscion, but of course dr. denies this for a yr. I found another dr. who put me in Physical threaphy, which was totally torture. I had to have hard plastic tools run across my ankle to break up the scar tissue. It did not work so I had another surgery this was my sr. yr in high school , and I was told to never play soccer again since I don't have feeling in my foot. The surgry helped I went through more pt . It got a lot better and I broke it one time did not know it until I wen to dr. and he x-rayed it. SO 7 yrs. later I have been having pain in it again.I found out I have bone on bone and just bad joint. SO i have had shots in it and it was doing alot better. I was able to run 3 miles again . Then me the talented person I am fell a month ago on some stairs and have been in alot of pain. I torn some muscles and old scar tissue and in general flared it up again. I know it is no fun, but it really does happen for a reason. If i nevered gohurt Iwould not of meet my future husban. I would not of gone to school in IN, I had a scholoarrship to KY to play soccer. Life is never what u have planned. I would talk w dr. and pt about going back when YOU feel like u can. I hope I helped "

" I can't say that what I went through is anything like what your going through with your back, but I have had an injury I guess you would call it that put my life on hold for about 2 1/2 years. I play water polo and during my soph year of high school my hip started to give out on me when I was egg beatering I honestly just thought I pulled something so I just kept playing through. Then during my jr year I noticed that it felt like my hip was popping out of the socket, I couldnt swim I couldnt egg beater... nothing, so I went to a Dr and he couldnt figure out what was wrong so he sent me to another Dr, this Dr said that it might have something to do with a back injury I had a few years ago so they did an MRI nothing came up, then they sent me to another Dr who said that it might be a nerve injury and wanted to do a nerve block... Well if they messed that up i was completely screwed so I went to another Dr who told me it was all in my head mean while I was on crutches and in so much pain that I didnt go to school because I couldnt be in a sitting position for more than a few minutes. I ended up being on crutches for 3 months with no real answer they just put me on medication. The meds helped for the most part until my sr year of high school... I couldnt live with the pain anymore, so I went to another dr.. this was the 5th one in almost 3 years, he told me right away what it was... a hip impingment, one week later they went in and scraped down the socket and the ball of my hip, it hurt like hell but at least I wasnt in pain once it healed.
So what Im saying I guess is that while surgery isnt always the option and I do know where your coming from with your sports trust me sports have been life too for as long as I can remember, you wont ever have a chance to play again if you dont get through the pain and the surgery might be the only thing you can do, but I would go see another dr and get another opinion before you do.
Feel free to add me if you have any other questions because I have some other surgeries as well... :/ "

" I would definitely see multiple doctors and do as much research as you can on the injury and the surgery. I was diagnosed with Kyphosis in high school which is a severe curveture of the spine. They gave me the option of major back surgery with indecipherable recovery or wearing a back brace. I was playing volleyball at the time and didn't want to stop as I was hoping for a scholarship. I decided to wear the back brace during the day and take it off for practice. It didn't improve my injury but it prevented it from getting worse. I played volleyball all through college and finally got the surgery once I was done. It was a beast but I'm glad I did it. I can finally run and play like a used to 2 years later. It's a long road, but I recovered well since I was young and in shape. I hope you can figure out something that works for you. Surgery sucks but you might come out of it fine. Just make sure you do your research. You know your body better than anyone else. "
