Discussion:
one side stronger than the other?

I'm just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue. The left side of my body has always been weaker than the left. Anybody else have a similar experience? My left foot is about a half shoe size smaller than the right; my left leg is about a quarter inch shorter than the right; and I've always had more muscle tightness, weakness, and balance problems with my left side. Is this common?

" I guess everyone is different but my left side is stronger than my right.. not that noticeably so though but if I'm going up stairs or something, I always lead with my left leg because it's the stronger of the two. "

" My right side is my "rock" side and I depend on it. Left side (from the waiste down) is weaker. Odd enough, though, I'm left handed :) "

" I am 32 with Spina Bifida, and have the same problem. My left leg is the weaker one. I have trouble getting my foot and leg to do what I want it to do. My right side is my dominent side (I'm right-handed, too), so it seems I always injure my right side since I use it more often. Yet my right side is and always has been my stronger side. I am thinking of asking my doctor to refer me to a physical therapist to strengthen my right side. Hopefully that will do some good. "

" 38 with SB....right handed and right side has always been my stronger side. Had knee replaced on right side so I had to try to use my left side (much weaker) to balance and depend on it more when I was trying to recover from surgery and regain strength in right side. Quite a funny sight at times ..haha...so now I just say my right side is my bionic side and I'm 5'4 on the left and 5'5 on the right..haha. Have to find the humor somewhere =) "

" just as a P.S. It's just common in everyone that one side is more dominent and stronger/weaker/larger/smaller than the other, it's just more noticeable in us SB' ers. Stay strong and live large! "

" That's true about the dominance thing and my right is stronger but it is also a lot shorter than the left and I don't think that holds in the general population. "
