I firmly believe that reality is the backbone of support.

I too use to quit because of one ailment or another caused by smoking, and then as soon as that cleared up I thought wtf I didn't smoke the one that did me any harm yet so I can go back to smoking again, well kids, it don't work that way, ya know when your told if you quit for something like 15 years then your lungs miraculously heal themselves as if you never smoked before, smoke an mirrors kids, you really never know when you smoke the one that did the damage, could be your first one, could be your millionth one, I can name you a half a dozen friends that haven't smoked in 10 years plus that now have smoking related illnesses, so be smart, become an alcoholic or a druggie or something man, but, whatever you do, quit smoking, you really do not want one of the diseases which may very well accompany it even years after you have quit, quit now/stay quit while you still have a chance, and yes, I would gladly kick any other addiction (which I have) that could be thrown at me rather than the addiction of smoking and the fear and heartache that feeds on it.

I have a buddy who is prone to strokes, had like 3 of them so far, he always tells me, man, why couldn't God send me heart attacks, at least they can repair those, and if you haven't pickled yourself or still have a brain cell left in ya, then, that too can be repaired, the diseases wrought by smoking CANNOT BE REPAIRED.

I never was a member of the high fiver crowd, however, man, I wouldn't hesitate to give an atta boy/girl to anyone what has stones enough to quit smoking, you deserve it!

Hopefully this may help someone who is considering either quitting or starting again.

Seven months, six days, 11 hours, 41 minutes and 15 seconds. 8819 cigarettes not smoked, saving $2,645.84. Life saved: 4 weeks, 2 days, 14 hours, 55 minutes.

" hiya
Hugs are good and so is factual information. A combination of both is probably the best way to help people stay quit.Thats why I always suggest people do some reading on whyquit.com. It has so much factual information and yet it is a site full of hope and opportunity for smokers wanting to quit, or new quitters and for the old timers.

" Hi Jona and well said! Cigarettes are chock full of poison. Nicotine in itself is a deadly poison and the rest of the "enhancers" that are added into the mix surely are not health food. Nicotine addiction is so deep rooted, so incredibly powerful that even years after quitting the occasional thought (not crave) to smoke can still cross our minds. Most of us can blow that thought off in a heartbeat once we learn how to get comfortable in a nonsmoking skin but I know that having been quit for well over 2-1/2 years I'm always surprised when that danged nicodemon decides to whisper it's lethal song in my ear. I think it's better to quit and allow our bodies to heal to whatever extent that they can. COPD is permanent but it's course can be arrested by not smoking. Chances of having a heart attack or a stroke are substantially lessened when we cease to poison our bodies with cigarettes. Circulation generally improves, sense of smell normally returns as well as the ability to taste. There are of course cosmetic improvements such as better looking skin color and tone, brighter teeth, reduced wrinkles, smelling better not to mention social acceptance so even though smoking might be the reason for our demise years down the road (my dad died of lung cancer 6 years after he quit smoking) I think we still stand a darned good chance of living a better quality life and who knows, maybe even a longer one when we stop smoking. " Yes lanky I agree with you wholeheartedly. Its never too late to quit. You can slow the progression of Emphysema and COPD markedly by quitting. You get less chest infection therfore theres less chance of pneumonia.
And there are tons of other benefits as you say.
A message of hope is a powerful way to convince smokers that quitting is not only possible it is the best way to improve their health
