As some one who is on her third attempt at quitting, i just felt the need to share something with you.

weekends were always hardest for me. There was a lot of down time and lack of structure compared to the week days. As I approach the 1 month mark, i have had some revelations for myself. they may or may not apply to you but hopefully it will help.

stress.......... have always said with each attempted quit that my failure was due to stress. well, i am here to tell you that the cigarette did not make the stress go away or help. if anything, it made it worse. now on top of the stress, i had guilt. i had picked up a cigarette and i lost all the groundwork i had put into quitting with one puff. I felt worse than i would have had i stuck to using NOPE. I now realize that the stress will always be there. The hardest part of the quit for me is retraining the brain to learn how to deal with things before i started smoking and that includes dealing with stress.

physically, i actually felt worse when i started smoking again.. the fatigue was back with a vengence. Sinus and allergies came back along with problems with hoarseness.

my self esteem when i had quit was getting better..... it got worse after i started smoking again.

So to the newbies who have just started and even ones who have been quit for awhile but are struggling, my advice to you is to stick with it. write down your reasons for quitting or why you have quit, make copies and keep several copies in strategic locations..... i use the refrigerator, taped one on my bathroom mirror and have one in my car. remember that while good reasons for quitting can be for your family, the number one reason should always be for yourself. i would give anything if i had stuck with it the first time.

stay close to ds. i've learned there is always someone on here to help and if there aren't, there will be someone on soon. Journal alot. it helps.

i can say that this group is such a big help and inspiration to me. You guys have made it possible for me to stick with it and i thank and love each of you.

" Good post Sambod. I agree with you that we must learn to deal with stress in other ways. Deep breathing is one of the ways that we can deal with it. "

" Great post sambod. When I have an urge, I keep reminding myself how much better off than I was. I've found myself saying NOPE aloud to keep on track.

And, I agree this is a great group. I've gotten so much inspiration here. "

" Great post sambod. May I add just a couple good reasons to stay quit: I have had several comments from friends and people at work that I appear much happier since I quit smoking. And another good thing that has happened to me is that I sleep better, oh that is soooo sweet.
Yes, do stay close to this group. It's been
a pleasure. "

" What a great post, Sambod. I agree with every point you made because I felt the same way when I quit and slipped!
I came up with the motto: Control your emotions or they will control you! I stress smoked too and it didn't change a thing.
Keep going on that quit. You're doing great! "

" Wonderful advise Sambod,as we all know now, smoking doesn't help in any way. It just kills you. Newbie or oldie, we can all learn from this. Awesome job on your quit. We can walk this road together.

" Well said Sambod- I guess we all learn this lesson in our own time. I sure resisted it for 38 years. I only hope I quit in time. But no matter what, I have learned to deal w/stress as a non-smoker, it takes practice and patience if youve smoked for a long time. But you can do it. After awhile you stop counting the days- you just know in your heart, that being a non-smoker is so much better than smoking. And this group and all the wisdom and mentors here really seal the deal for success!!!! Right on Sambod!!!!!!!!! "
