I'm addicted to cigarettes and have been forever. I have tried to quit many times but I can't seem to get it right. I'm also an alcoholic but can go for periods of time like a month or so without drinking. I think the nicotine habit is probably worse than alcoholism.

I'm new and looking for some support and ideas on good ways to quit smoking.

" Curtis, welcome to our group. sounds like you have more than one issue to deal with. Have you seen a doctor yet on your smoking? I saw my doctor when it was time for me to stop and he was able to suggest I use the patch and welubrin to stop. I used them both and although I went though some very tough days, I've been able to make it to 117 days smoke free. It is great to live without those smokes, didn't think so, but it really is.
This support group is wonderful and has so many loving and caring people. They are willing to help anyone and will do so for you. Are you ready to quit, do you need to set a date to quit? No lie, it is tough and not easy but well worth it. Each day, be sure to answer to roll call and pledge and that way you can get to know the other members. We will help you where we can. Good luck and you are not alone. "

" Curtis, have no fear sir, there is a non-smoker inside of you just waiting to be born. It's not as hard as you might think once you understand the addiction and how to approach your new life as a non-smoker.

At this point, I would say this is the best thinking on how to quit:

Allen Carr

Your first decision to come here was a brilliant one, I couldn't have made it without this group. We're with you brother.

I smoked 29 years and have been a non-smoker for 159 days. Trust me, if I can do it, you can to! "

" Thanks Duck, Brian..... I've been on the fence about this for years and have (tentatively) decided to make another try. I have heard that a person should set a day to quit so I made it for Saturday on my goals thing.

I probably should see my doctor first and be well-armed to quit. I've done it without help or patches or anything before and can't finish more than a day or two before I want to tear my hair out. Being an alcoholic too (as well as a recently diagnosed diabetic) I have alot on my plate and don't want to blow it. Booze is a different matter for me, it's not so much a craving as it is a mental thing and I've gone long periods without drinking before. I'm not drinking now. But the dietary restrictions along with not drinking and now trying to stop smoking is overwhelming me.

If I can get an appointment to see my doc maybe I can get Welbutrin (which helps I've heard) or get some patches on my own. Patches or Copenhagen work for me to not smoke on long flights and at work. I work in an office and it looks bad for me to go out to smoke every half-hour so I chew. Who wants to come into my cubicle and see a styrofoam cup half-full of ..... well, you know

So should I get the patch and start this weekend or should I wait until I see my doctor? I wanna live and breathe..... "

" Hi the Curtis and welcome to the asylum (ummmm, I mean group).

You sound incredibly honest with yourself, that's a good thing. I know I am my own worse enemy.

I moved my quit date around a few times. I ended up quitting on Aug 13th of this year. This group was incredibly helpful, it's comforting to know that you are not alone - and You're not!

We have all been down this road.... We make our own decisions. I hope you quit, it's a useless, expensive dirty addiction. I am happy to be free from it. Just walking out the door and not checking for my cigs and lighter makes it worth it!

Stick around, we're all here for you.

Mike "

" Curtis, it is up to you when you start, but if I were you, I would see the doctor first and make sure he is aware of your other issues so that what you do doesn't make something else worse. Just my thoughts. "

" i havent had a drink since aug 2008 and i can say it has been WAY harder to quit smoking! please do a lot of reading here: http://www.dailystrength.org/group... it is a collection of old posts from this group. you will also find the free online version of allen carrs book there. i suggest you read it. it is a wonderful education tool in nicotine addiction and recovery!!! as for ideas on how to quit, you have to find the path that works best for you. my personal way is cold turkey..id rather detox fast and get to work on the psychological recoveryLOL. others prefer a NRT to take the edge off. the hardest part of recovery is reprogramming your brain to think in a whole new way...reward yourself everyday and follow the 5 d's..drink water, deep breathe, distract, delay and discuss! " It seems likethe others here have given you some good advice. Listen to them and be strong. This is doable. You can do this. We all have been where you are at right now and we all lived to tell our stories...Pick your date and just do it. I liked the cold turkey approach the best.Good luck, Curtis. "

" Hi Curtis - welcome to the group. I quit using the patch, a smoking cessation class and lots of support from this group. If you're looking for support, you're in exactly the right place. For me, the daily pledge and roll call help so much. Stick around and good luck with your quit. "
