The Hardest Part

(First of all, is it ok for me to post in this forum even though I fell off the wagon and am smoking again?)

As for my post, I just wanted to mention that I think I know what my trigger is; the computer! Sure, stress played a big part in my failed attempt as well, but being on the computer and not smoking was the hardest part for me. I'm a writer (among other things) and since I've been smoking for 22 years, my creativity just doesn't seem to flow when I'm uncomfortable. Does that make sense? I can't concentrate, or work, or anything! Sitting down and losing myself in a tv show (which I really hate) is the only thing I can do that doesn't require concentration. And I honestly don't think it's the nicotine I can't live without. It's more like I haven't yet learned how to live without that cigarette in my hand. It's so hard!

I'm considering another attempt on the Great American Smoke Out day, but I'm really scared of gaining more weight. I hate to exercise. I know that's horrible, and I've been swearing to myself I'd do it, but jeez - I just hate it so much!

" Man, I can commiserate, I tried quitting for 35 years and failed more times than not for the same reason, I just couldn't think, perform or enjoy anything without smoking, then I was diagnosed with late stage emphysema last Christmas and thought I would give "Quitting" another go, well, as usual I was a bit late and quite a few dollars short but I am over 7 months quit now and have raised the dying curve a bit, I sure hope you are a quicker study than I was, and ya know what, it does get easier and now I really honest to god don't miss it, what a dumb sh1t I was, well, I hope this helps you in your quest. " hiya
Yes staying quit is hard but it is doable. The people in this group are living proof of that. You need to find something else to do while you are on the computer. Sipping a icy glass of water or chewing gum etc etc
If you have time do some reading on whyquit.com because knowledge is power. That site has so much info on the addiction and how to quit.
I hope you quit soon and can come to our daily rollcall and pledge
Hugssssssss Deb "

" I understand what you mean about the concentration, I had the same problem initially, but it gets better. Give yourself a few days to relax and veg out on the couch, eat everything in sight. Just don't smoke!! After a few days, you will start resuming your normal routine! (Just with out smoking) Good luck

" Hi Newage,
Nobody dies from being overweight but smoking WILL kill you. I know what you mean about the hand/mouth thing. I cut straws in half and puffed on them. It is about the same size as a cig but when you inhale with it you are getting good clean pure AIR.
Quitting on Great American Smokeout Day ( Nov.17th) is a great idea. You will have lots of company. We are all with you whenever you are ready...Hugs, Mayberry "

" you hit the nail on the head...nicotine recovery isnt ALL about giving up the nicotine, its learning how to live again without it. read allen carrs book..PLEASE! it is very helpful in nicotine addiction and more importantly, recovery. you can find a link to the free online version of it here: http://www.dailystrength.org/group... nicotine recovery is a process that involves retraining your brain to think in a whole new way..the way it did before you began smoking.
