Well... After smoking since the age of 13 (I am 49 now), I have decided to quit smoking. My quit day was yesterday, Independence Day!!
So far so good... I was wearing a Step 1 patch that my Mom gave since she quit 3 weeks ago after 50 years of smoking (yeay) and I have to say that I did not notice the difference when I was wearing the patch yesterday, to today with no patch. Since I am on SSD due to 4 spinal surgeries and the cigarettes in the State of Florida has just gone up again another $1.00, that is $2.00 in less than 6 months, I keep telling myself, I can't afford this anymore! I can't buy them, is either food, gas or cigarettes.... I am chosing the first 2. I know that I am going to need a support group for those moments were I will go stir crazy, right? It hasn't happened yet, but I know it will, LOL! My Doc also put me on Wellbutrin and also a medication for anxiety since he says that anxiety is what makes us want to smoke... OK, I just wanted to say hi and to join this group. I am sure that I am going to need all the help that I can get when I have "those moments". I will see y'all around! It's great that you've decided to quit! Good for you! I quit around the time that your mother quit, but I went cold turkey and that decision is nearly killing me. For me everyday since then, have been an uphill battle. The cravings are so strong, and to be honest, if I don't find something else to replace that habit soon, I fear that I will go back to smoking. Maybe I should have done what your mother did, or use the gum??? Stay strong and good luck!

Great decision Tipper- you really will start geeling better. The first week or two is hard but doable. Just do anything but smoke- lots of naps and black licorice helped me thru the first month. Time is your friend so have patience. And keep a strong and positive attitude- it helps. We are all here for you.

Hi tipper and welcome to DS.
Welcome also to bunnydasher. You have both made great decisions to quit smoking and also a great decision to come here to DS for support. We are group of people from all around the world who have all been where you are now so we do understand. You need to remember this is not a habit you are trying to give up. This is a drug addiction - yes Nicotine is a drug and you are drug addicts. When someone quits smoking their body goes through physical withdrawal. The good news is that only lasts a few days. After that it is a case of re-training the brain to a life without cigarettes. As Hike said, read Allen Carr's book. It can be downloaded in PDF format from here http://nerukom.googlepages.com/All... You can also read some old posts from this group here http://dailystrength.org/groups/go... You will find lots of tips and advice to help you there. For example, take a look at the post "A list of things that might help with your quit". It helps a lot if you post to the 'pledge' and 'rollcall' every day. It will also let us all know how you are getting on. If you need any more help then shout out. I am sure someone will be able to help.

Congrats on your great decision to quit .... you will be very glad to be a non smoker.
I used a lot of distractions to help me get through the early days .... Tootsie-pops, life savers, pencil puzzles, walks around the block ... whatever it takes. Good luck.

welcome tipper you have made one of the best decisions of your life and the people on this group will help you every step of the way. Your Mum is doing a great thing too. Wow you can help each othere. Its not easy to stay quit but if you do a bit of reading on whyquit, com and read allen carrs bool easy way to stop smoking that will help you a lot. I used the patch and it helped me. When you get a craving remember the 5 D,s delay.distract, deep breathe, drink water and DS (this site) Try and sign in for the pledge each day or the rollcall. Once again welcome welcome welcome

Congratulations Tipper on your decision to quite. Smart move and welcome to this board it's an awesome place, we have all been in your shoes and know the first week is the hardest. And I know what you mean about the cost of smoking it's gone up up up. Just imagine all you can do with the extra money. I treat myself for being a NOPER and it's fun. Keep in mind NOPE - not one puff ever - one day at a time. Good luck & (hugs :) littlemac
