How to stop??????

I have been smoking for over 30 years and have tried several times to give up, but I just don't seem to have the will power. I know all the pitfalls, and have already had one very tiny stroke. Smoking helps ease my anxiety or does it just cover it up, not sure, but think I have to do something to try and stop. Any help would be appreciated.

" Hi Merylou and welcome to DS.

As Brian said, read Allen Carr's book. You will also find a collection of old posts from this group here

Set yourself a quit date. Throw away all smoking material (cigarettes, lighters, ashtrays etc) and start your new life as a non-smoker.

You can do this if you really want to. You have to want to quit more than you want to smoke. "

" Please read Allen Carr's book - The Easy Way to Stop Smoking ... he teaches that smoking does not ease your anxiety / stress .. rather smoking creates stress! I would have never believed it as a smoker , but smoking DOES cause stress .. How nice it is now as a non smoker to travel go through airports, etc and not have to stress out where I am going to smoke. How nice it is to be with non-smoking family and friends and not have to stress out about when I am going to get my next cigarette. You won't realize how much stress smoking creates until you have been quit for a month or so.

Also smoking a cigarette does not ease a craving .. rather it creates the next craving ... Break the cycle !!

Good luck ... I hope you join the happy ranks of non-smoking !! "

" This is totally a mind game. I keep stopping and then starting up again and it's making me crazy. The two biggest helps for me on this run (understand I'm only on day 4) are that I promised a child I'd stop on a certain day and I don't want to break a promise to a child (even in secret), and finding someone I can talk to about how hard it is, and who can encourage me. It is very hard, and you need a buddy to help you. Good luck. "
