I QUIT!

Hi to all from Torquay, S.W. England!
I am a new member, I'm just starting my 7th day since I quit. I have used one Nicoteen patch, but apart from that I have gone "cold turkey", although I have got through quite a few packs of Wrigley's Extra Chewing Gum! I feel I have an angel on one shoulder saying "Well done, don't smoke," etc etc, and the devil on the other shoulder saying " Go on, have a cigarette, Lovely Fags!" etc etc!!!. I am more determined than ever to stay off the fags. Any advice from you good people would be appreciated. Best wishes, Paul S. Posted on 07/07/07, 01:46 am |

Not sure what advice to give you, you seem to have it sussed and are doing really well.
Ignore the devil on your shoulder, he'll slowly fade and go away, be prepared for the days when he can shout a lot louder than the angel, he'll lose his voice before the angel does. Keep busy whenever he's talking to you, and drink lots of water, he hates that :) You're doing really well, and will you look at that, once you've got today out the way, it'll be a whole week without the evil smokesticks, you're doing amazingly well. Feel proud and walk tall. Best of luck, and stick with it. Richard.

hey Richard do not think you are getting my "cheerleading" spot just because I was gone for the day.....LOL. You have been great!!! Paul support from others is the key I think. I am at nine days I feel pretty good, I am not over eating, and I am not killing anyone in my house. Like I have done in the past well not literaly. Every time I come here there is someone there to give a kind word, support and friendship. I do not think I would have done as well as I have if I did not find this site. Sometimes I keep my hands busy bye typing on the site..We are all in the same boat so welcome abord and jump on in!!!!

Hi, and thanks for your kind messages!
I never really bought the idea of "support groups" before. The kind of thing you see on TV where one guy stands up, announces "HI, I'M PAUL, AND I'M A SMOKER/ALCOHOLIC/POT SMOKER/COMPUTER GAME ADDICT" etc etc, then the people grouped around all make noises of support, so this is the first time I have joined one of these forums. I have to say that I'm feel amazed and gratified at the response from you good people. Now, here is the confession: I had a lovely evening last night, I went out to the steakhouse with my wife to celebrate our 12 years of marriage, (by the way,if any of you guys should end up in Torquay, SW England, then Hooks restaurant, just up from the harbour, is the most supremely excellent steak house that I have ever known, I had a 8oz rump, topped with 3 tiger prawns and pepper sauce which was just heaven on a plate!) Anyway, I digress, after such a lovely evening, I got the cravings really strong, which I have to admit I gave in to. After all, there is nothing better than a smoke after such a wonderful meal, or that is what I used to think. I had a cigarette, but after 3 or 4 puffs, I realized I was not enjoying it at all. It tasted absolutely foul. So I threw it away, and sitting here this sunny Sunday morning, I feel more convinced than ever that I will not smoke again. After dinner we met up with my wife's sister and her husband of a couple of beers. They are both smokers, so I became a bit of an ex-smoking bore with them. My Sister-in-law says she will give up in a couple of weeks, which I will encourage, but I've yet to crack her husband, but I will keep on trying. Thanks again for your kind messages and support, and if my story of last night is of any encouragement to any of you, then I'm pleased. Best wishes, Paul.

Paul,
I am encouraged to go to England to eat after listening to you and Richard Talk about the food you have eaten lately YUM, YUM. I have decided to take the money I would have spent every week on smokes about 40.00 and put it aside and in one year I am going to take a trip. I was with you about support groups especially sharing my feelings on the net. to be very honest I would never had made it if not for all my wonderful friends here!!!!!! My experience with talking to people on the net went to myspace (which I find to be stuppied and offensive)so I have been very happy here. Now can you please stand up and tell us about yourself so we can huddle around you listen and clap....LOL Best of wishes to you!!!! ((((((HUGS))))))) Rhonda
