What I mean by this: Ive leard so many stories by now from ex-smokers, who become and finally non-smokers. Some actually succeeded with the first try out! One of my sisters did it that way. She lives back East (Roch. NY) Anyway, she's told me several times, how she quit. (she quit over 10 yrs ago now). One day, she said to herself as she looked at her pack of ciggaretes and also at her cigg. that she was going to light up: "How can you have power over me? YOU DONT! youre just a little tobaacco ole stick.!" (or something similar).
Wow...lol... so she stuck them in her desk drawer, and just cold turkey!quit! At that moment! & telling herself its was mind over matter. So anytime she got tempted? she'd look ather pack of ciggs. and say: you donthave any power over me!SHe said hse kept that pack in that drawer for like a year? I guess to test herself/prove a point to herself?! But, She's never smoked since according to her. she can even be around smokers, no temptation! She also lets folks who came by to visit her? have a cigg or 2 in her house when its cold out, like snow storm or cold weather.. eek!! Now, That I DON"T and WON"T do! I have only smoked outside for years now and hate the smell outside! let alone when i used to smoke indoors yrs ago!! I will not be saying sure light up!! I wont, dont & cant tolerate that STENCH once I get in recovery mode with this addiction. Lotys of other stories ive ehard as well, but thatsa one popping up at me today! LOL My typing Sux!!!! no worries, though. I understand what you are saying about the quitting!!! I decided to quit 2 days before I did---I kept saying I needed to quit, just never did it. I wore the step 2 patch for one week and then went cold turkey off. I only smoked half a pack of ciggies a day, but it doesn't matter to your mind how many you smoke--just that you did!!! The physical addiction is different depending on how much you smoke, but the mental is recovery is the same I think!!!
I'm with you---I can't stand the smell of the cigarette smoke that drifts across the balcony friom my neighbor's houdse---certainly won't allow anyone to smoke in my house!!!!

oh! shoot! I just had a vivid reminder! of a smoker. Who didnt even quir, when he was on oxygen, and had cancer. Talkabout insanity of an addiction! My half-brother, many yrs older than me, from my dads 1st marriage. (Dad was 20 yrs older than my Mom as well).Anyway, I went back east for a few yrs. and I was never close to this half brotehr, he drank alot and i was sober, and lets just say we didnt have much in common in general. However, some of my family let me know that he had cancer, on oxygen and was still smoking. ANd I was like omigawd! I told my sis and a few others, "If I ever am sick like that and on oxygen for any reason!" *"Please get met me a gun to shoot myself!"... I meant it! well in a way...i did (my sister said we will remind you if it happens!!!" so, back to the story... everyone was saying, well, its not Like Bob is goona live no matter what he does at this point?! hes terminal growing worse.and Drs. say hes going soone than later..so they were basically saying, why should he stop or try to change now? He didn't have much left to look forward too.... While i understood the points they made? To me this was still so sad.....I just honestly didn't want to go get any REZ discounted or any other priced ciggs for him, as someone had asked me to do...... I said no, I just can't do it!
I mean ok, maybe his odds could have improved possibly?!if he could have risked quitting smoking when he waas diagnosed? he may have had betetr quality of life while he was alive, [plus perhaps lived longer?) So, I'm not saying I truly KNOW how Id handle this scenario if it was me instead of him?! I hope to Goddess, I'd try to quit! Just some stories to make me and others think.....Best Of Luck & Blessings to all! Tomm. is mine and my sweetie's quit day!! eeeekkk!!!!! I'm going to be on here postin' I bet!! Jess

Hey jess, your story hit home for me too!!! I have an ex-brother-in-law who was diagnosed with emphesema (sp) on oxygen and still smoking!!! The really stupid thing about it was that his dad, my father-in-law died of lung cancer and he smoked right up until the minute he died!!!! literally. my ex has finally quit after he had a heart attack!!! and his wife (they have been together for 25 years) hasn't smoked in 15 years, I'm sure!!!
I am not sure whether quitting when these poor individuals would have prevented their illnesses from happening, but I can tell you that, had they quit when they first sound out, thier quality of what life they had left would have been greatly improved!!!!!! Mikie---a member of this community, smoke-free for 4 years has a very interesting journal entry about smoking in her life!!! LOL Though she may not appreciate me very much for saying this, I was very impressed with it when I read it. She is very up-front and hard core about it---you might enjoy the read!!! Good luck to all this evening---I will be in and out all night---message me if ya need me!!!! Love and hugs to all!!!! Cheryl
