I was wondering if any of you that have quit, smoked at the table while you were cooking and waiting for it to get done?
So far all I can think of to keep my right hand busy and my mind off of cigarettes is to make lists (grocery, to-do) etc. OR do my puzzle books. While waiting for things to cook because I always smoked then. Any suggestions? It has to be something that won't make a big mess on the table and that keeps my right hand constantly busy. I have candy and gum ready. Thank you all so much for all of your help. Posted on 08/24/09, 12:08 am |

LOL, I did that, while waiting for water to boil, the timer to go off etc. my husband always called me peg bundy cause on married with children she would smoke while cooking! Sometimes I still catch myself wanting a cig during that time and I pop a mouthful of sunflower seeds in my mouth or a piece of gum. Or, another way to go around it is to not cook at all!!!!! Just kidding, that is my dorky sense of humor....

What about having a toothpick in your mouth? I find that I enjoy that -- and hold it like a cigarette from time to time...

I've found that being on the puter on this site or any other sites that help with our smoking DEMON..
Or just something of interest is the best way to spend that few mins when u're cooking

You can cut straws the size of a cigarette and suck on and breathe through that for a distraction. Kind of mimics smoking but w/out the health risks. I find I watch tv more since I quit. Maybe you could tape your favorite shows and use that for a distraction while cooking.

Yep, Peg Bundy - that's me! LOL. Only I try to keep the ashes out of the frying pan (sometimes) LOL. Oh how I wish I COULD just stop cooking, tried that already but hungry-hubby got upset LOL. I really like the idea of the Nintendo DS brain game! Gonna look for one of them! Since I am stuck in the kitchen for certain amount of time everyday I can't get on the puter or practice piano (like I want to) then, but I'm gonna do those at other times instead of smoking. But reading a magazine, or keeping my journal would work. And I will add the toothpicks and straws to my little basket I have ready which has in it a nicotrol (fake cig) inhaler and cinnamon sticks all ready so I have something for hand to mouth. I'm writting all this down so I won't forget anything, being prepared is gonna help me alot. I'm down from 20 cigs a day to 15 now and getting ready to quit while cooking, that will knock it down a few more. Great suggestions you guys! Thank you all so much!

Deb, at first when I read your reply, I thought well I already always have a Pepsi to sip on then so that wouldln't help much, but I could switch from Pepsi to drinking water then! Just work on downing a great big glass or two of water and then I won't eat so much either! I had to think about it few minutes but that's a great suggestion! I wanted to work in some more water while quitting anyway, I think it helps us to heal. Thanks Deb, you got me thinking good! Wantstolive

Hey back I liked your suggestions especially the nintendo brain game. But The water is good cos it means you cant eat as much when you finally sit down to eat your meal. This can only be a good thing as most of us have complained about the weight gain we have experienced due to our quit.
BUTTTTTTTTTT Im still liking that Nintendo suggestion andddddddd I wouldnt have the wine then cos i would have to be alert so that I could use my brain for the game lol Hugssssssss Deb
