My 4 year old gets up in the middle of the night

.. every night. He's always sneaking around the house at random hours of the night going through things, playing with the computer and dvd player and so on. He's ruined things. Just when we think we know when to get up in order to prevent him, he gets up earlier. Oh, and we've tried hiding things, putting them up higher, to no avail. Plus we're limited on what we can do due to lack of excess money and adequate space in our apartment.

His father has ADHD, and my son is very hyper during the day and has a short attention span, little patience, and so on. In other words, it's possible he has it, too, but of course a little early to dx.

Has anyone else had this problem? What has worked? I don't want to barricade him into his room in case of a fire. However, something has to happen because there's only so much we can take.

" My son is 5 and we have had the same problem and then some. We had him diagnosed at 4. You have to take him to a psyhciatrist and get a psych eval done. but our son's doc has us giving our son melatonin, you can get it at any wal-mart or pharmacy with the vitamins. My son still gets up in the middle of the night but it's usual just to go potty and then back to bed. It's safe with just about any other meds he maybe taking. I hope this helps. "

" I haven't had an experience like yours. I have to ask if you've spoken to a doctor (or multiple doctors for multiple opinions) about this? Because he's so young he can't even really describe exactly what's going on either, which is even harder for you :/ "

" Move him onto your bedside until he stops. Lock your room with him inside it. Once he gets that its wrong to wake up at night, then he'll change his own circadian clock. Also, keep him up constantly for 24 hours till he is so dead tired he will sleep in the night. If he was your puppy what would you do? You would wake him in the day till he was one cranky dog! Somehow he has understood that there are benefits to the night. Teach him there are even greater benefits to the day. "
