I have a very mild case of sleep apnea. And to be honest, I have not been using my machine. The first night I used it,I had ringing in my ears and this strange congested feeling in my chess.VERY hard time falling asleep and exhaling in the mask..Just horrible experiance.
But, I'm ALWAYS waking up from my sleep and toss and turn for hours before falling back to sleep. I sometime awaken with vertigo. I just want to stay asleep and not wake up. I heard having sleep apnea your not suppose to use sleep aids. Is that true? Can anyone give me some advice to this situation besides using my cpap machine? Because I know that will help too. Machine+sleep aid perhapes? ~Candy Posted on 11/03/09, 11:11 am |

I read your post and I told you in the past my husband has severe sleep apnea and is used to his machine, but I never heard that he could not use any meds. Just a thought and you can try it, since it's cheap...I use the GNC Melatonin 1, as in ONE, and it's cherry flavored and it's Sublingual. I actually bite that in 1/2, which is enough for me. Not sure why, but it is. Then I take the other 1/2 the next nite. They are tiny white pills and taste great. I put under my tongue and they melt. The one bottle is like $5.00. That is the only Melatonin that I like and works for me. Drug store brands are expensive and maybe too powerful, but it relaxes you and I sleep most of the night. Dr. Ox, who is on TV says we loose melatonin as we get older and he says it's fine to take it. The fact I take very little I'm sure not worried and I've taken it now for like five or six years! You have to be ready for bed, take it and then I just read or watch TV and in like 20 mins I get sleepy. If I decide to pick up the house or do something physical, then it does not work that well. Try it and see. Won't hurt! Dee

I've been using my Cpap machine for about 6 years now. At first I had a hard time getting used to it, kept taking the mask off during the night without realizing it, it would be lying next to me in the morning! Now I NEVER sleep without it! You have to have a good fitting mask otherwise it will bother you. It takes awhile and some trial & error but you'll eventually get used to it. The air pressure has to be right too, so work with your "sleep doc", he should be able to help you. Took me about a year to get used to it. But I never have trouble falling asleep now, seems as soon as I put the mask on, I'm out like a light. I've never used sleep aids so can't help you on that one. I'm sure you've heard that some people need "white noise" eg:(fan blowing, radio playing etc:) to help them sleep. Well, I think my machine is my "white noise". Good luck! Hang in there!
